Christina Wilbur might be a Millennial but despite her youth, she certainly has an affinity for history, writing, and teaching. A look at her Vita confirms that she is well-respected in all those roles.
Christina is a teacher at both Lamar University and at Lamar State College-Port Arthur. At Lamar University, she actually teaches in both the History and Pedagogy departments. She has several works published and more underway. In Sound Historian (Vol.12, 2009), her article "Lawless Leaders and a County Out of Control: Jefferson County and the James Commission, 1960" surely hits close to home.
Christina's presentation to Rotarians will not only examine Beaumont during the infamous James Commission, but furthermore [the question of] what originally brought an unwanted investigation by the state along with national publicity to Jefferson County. Additionally, the local citizens' reaction to the investigation will be examined.

February 17is designated as the annual "Rotary Has Heart!" Day of Service! We will enjoy a quick lunch and basic meeting business but then....it will be time to roll-up your sleeves and get to work! We need everyone and friends to come give less than an hour to our main service project, assembling 200 layette bags for women and children in Nicaragua. We will also help local charitable agencies with some hands-on projects for their community service work. Last year was a lot of fun and this year will be the same. Bring friends and prospective members, or come alone, but whatever you do, don't miss it!
February 24 will be another favorite program with the presentation of the T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics. This is a much anticipated announcement each year and you will not want to miss hearing an excellent speaker and the news of the award recipient firsthand.
The Service Projects Selection Committee is again opening the process for submission of new service project ideas with which the club can become involved. We have done some good work at local agencies that needed some assistance. It was fun and very rewarding, and it's time to do more!
Now it is time to look ahead and consider where and how the Club can contribute to another hands-on project that can have an impact on our community. Give it some thought, talk to others and submit a proposal for consideration.
Rotary After Hours: A Lovely Evening on the Neches!

“Nothing makes sense out of context" began the presentation of Mr. Oxer, an engineer by career. Changes in business and career building have been on a rapid scale from 1970 to present. The structures of power have changed and at this time we are adding somewhere around 50% more data each year to the management of business.
The five points that follow are related to how each one of us views our business and what is happening in the business and employee world.
The adaptability of decision-making and organizing for change is important. Most decisions take about a year to be implemented and the business that can make the change happen and still be ahead of the forecast of the future will be ahead. The capacity to predict important changes that are in the future is of value. Agreement to change in a large group no longer means consensus of everyone but an agreement to resolve a problem that meets the changing landscape.
The learning speed of employees and employers is on a curving timeline as it develops to the top. This is good but it makes it very difficult to change a job structure that has been developed by someone else. Time is needed to work and train employees to changing systems.
Empathy is necessary to understand the attitudes of others. This is a powerful quality in a leader as well as necessary as groups work toward positive problem solving situations.
Intellectual diversity and tolerance are necessary as people work towards understanding others’ thought processes and how that understanding can be put to the best use. Different cultures do have different processes of thinking.
Be aware of what you see or don’t see. It takes energy and skills when interviewing prospective employees and listening to what they are or aren’t telling you, and trying to figure out how they might fit in your structure. Keep your mind open to new things.
