The Sabine-Neches Navigation District received approval from the federal government to dredge the 65-mile-long ship channel in order to deepen the waterway by eight feet.
Deepening the waterway will incorporate the district’s ship channel that runs both the Neches and Sabine rivers. Henderson said the ship channel is 65 miles long, 40 feet deep and 400-to-700 feet wide now.
Clayton Henderson, Navigation District assistant manager, said the district is nearing the kickoff of the deepening project and he will give Rotarians an update on the impact and effects.
The wait is over: You’ve been chompin’ at the bit to tell us what service projects we should do as a club, and this is your chance! Submittal forms will be available by this Wednesday. All project proposals will require an endorsement from a member of our club who will serve as an advocate for the project, clarify information and ensure that the project aligns with the club’s service project criteria.
We will rely on you to get this information out to the organizations you support.
Two types of projects can be submitted: Short-term service projects (anticipated budget from $0 - $500 that can be accomplished in a limited number of work days) and Community Improvement Projects (budget from $25,000 to $50,000 that can be accomplished within a Rotary year). The committee anticipates selecting four short-term projects (to be performed one per quarter during 2015) plus a Community Improvement Project beginning in Fall 2015 with completion by Spring 2016. Fundraising for this project would begin upon selection.
Criteria for the projects:

Finalists will be selected by the end of December, 2014.

The first Rabbi Samuel Rosinger Humanitarian Award Dinner was held recently at Temple Emanuel. The event honored two Rotarians, James Broussard and Charlie Weinbaum,
for their commitment to serving others in our community. We, too, thank them for the many contributions to our club and the entire Southeast Texas area.
James Broussard
Charlie Weinbaum
It should be noted that Rabbi Samuel Rosinger was a member of our club also and served as President from 1930-31. He wrote profusely and voraciously in the RotaryGrams. You can read some of his articles by linking here: http://portal.clubrunner.ca/3775/SitePage/1930-31-president-sam-rosinger
Senior Rotary leaders gathered Tuesday at the White House to honor 10 women, including one from Texas, for their service projects, an event attended by members of U.S. President Barack Obama's senior staff.
The Rotary members presented their projects, in the hopes of creating new inroads for government partnerships and support.
"This is recognition of the great work that they do but also serves as a great vehicle to inspire others to do similar kinds of things," said Rotary General Secretary John Hewko. "One of the things we're doing a better job of is sharing our story to the non-Rotary world."
The honorees were selected by Rotary senior leaders and endorsed by the White House from clubs around the U.S. but their projects touch lives across the globe.
Today's Rotary Program was presented by John Sabino and Steve Morgan, both of whom specialize in Asset Management for Capital One. They were introduced by Rotarian Steve McDonald. Additionally, there were several local Capital One executives in attendance, including our club's assistant governor Brad Taylor, Bill Darling and Jean Moncla.
John Sabino stated that the services of Capital One are quite broad and include many interests, including the non-profit sectors as well as the energy and transportation industry. He further stated that at least 40% of Capital One's Asset Management includes Texas & Louisiana since 3 of the 4 approved LNG terminals are located in our region. John then turned the Program over to Steve Morgan.
Steve presented a program entitled "Economy: Globally and At Home." His power-point presentation included many charts and graphs which he used to emphasize the importance of Beaumont-Port Arthur. Steve stated that key drivers for energy demands are and will, for some time, be natural gas and oil-extraction most of which comes through our region. He focused on some very optimistic key indicators about the state of our economy which included the following:
the national unemployment-rate is decreasing
personal income is ....UP
personal spending is....UP
consumer confidence is...UP
housing/construction is......UP
U.S. auto sales are .............UP
housing unit construction is....Increasing
commodity prices are.............Stable
inflation rate is ........................Stable
All of these indicators are very good news! As it relates to the energy sector, we have more opportunities to increase our capacity to export which is reducing our dependence on foreign energy imports.
He briefly mentioned that Russia's economy is mainly petro-chemical but the demand from abroad has decreased, which results in a 'less-than rosy picture' for Russia's economy.
Good news for our local economy means good news for our nation.
