PROGRAM PREVIEW
January 21, 2015

"Employing Exemplary
Business Practices"

Jeff Dyson
Director
Lamar MBA Program

If this week's program was a newspaper article, the headline might read "Local Boy Makes Good." Jeff Dyson is an excellent example of a BISD and Lamar graduate who has been a contributing and integral part of our local community for quite some time. He agreed to share "best practices" from his years in business in Beaumont as he might share with students who are now lucky enough to learn from an experienced professional businessman.

For more than 30 years, Jeff Dyson was Owner/President of M & D Supply, Inc. He held or is currently in leadership positions of community service on numerous non-profit and for-profit boards, including Goodwill Industries, Salvation Army, Baptist Hospital Southeast Texas,  Habitat for Humanity, Southwestern Hardware and Implement Association, and Community Hospital Corporation.  Jeff has also served as a board member for MidSouth Bank and Handy Hardware Wholesale.

Since 2007, Jeff has been instructor in the College of Business at Lamar. From 2008 – 2012, he held the position of Coordinator of The Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. Since 2012, he has served as Director of the renowned Lamar MBA and Graduate Certificate Programs.

Moreover, Jeff was a member of the Rotary Club of Beaumont and was named recipient of the most-coveted T. Kelsey Lamb, Sr. Award for Business Ethics, which just about says it all.  He is held in high esteem as a man of integrity.  He is a business leader among business leaders.

We are delighted to welcome back a former Rotarian, Jeff Dyson.

FEBRUARY 18: Club Service Day
Indeed, “Rotary has heart,” and the Rotary Club of Beaumont has a BIG heart, giving time and resources in Service Above Self year round.   How appropriate that we designate a date close to Valentine’s Day, as our Club Service Day, providing hands-on service to multiple projects and collectively having a BIG impact!

President Vernon Pierce envisions a day when, rather than a speaker presentation, Club members become actively involved in hands-on service projects.  Including the annual assembly of Layette bags for women and children of Nicaragua, everyone will have the opportunity to roll up his/her sleeves and give of themselves in service to one or more projects.

Will your favorite nonprofit, service organization be involved?  Is there something the club members can do to help you get a project started and/or completed at the weekly meeting?  Perhaps it is as simple as folding papers or affixing stamps to a mailing, assembling items for client giftbags, repairing small toys, or any other task* for which a service organization (please, no for-profit business projects!) needs volunteer assistance.  We need to hear that you have an idea for the Club Service Day!

For more information and to express your interest, please contact the Rotary Office at 842-1913 or stay briefly after the meeting on Wednesday, January 14.  We are looking forward to this exciting day and hope your favorite service organization will be a part.

*Please remember, we are planning to have projects done in the Ballrooms of the Elegante.  Any materials needed for the project will need to be brought to the hotel and removed when completed.

PROGRAM REVIEW
January 14, 2015

"RYLA Makes History"

Tim Sudela,
Michael Perez,
and
Cindy Cherry
by John Neely

Our meeting program today was headlined by RYLA Team Leader, Tim Sudela.  Tim was introduced by President Elect Pat Anderson who was substituting for President Vernon Pierce.

Tim thanked the RYLA Team which consisted of volunteers Michael Perez, Cindy Cherry, Dr. Teresa Simpson, and Shawn Pierce.  He also thanked the volunteers who made up the "supporting cast": Jim Baxter, Cynthia Wolf, Roger Bemis, Carolyn Fernandez, Nakisha Myles.  Cindy Cherry's daughter, Hannah, was given a special round of applause for her contributions to the program's success as well.

Each in turn, Tim, Michael and Cindy shared a glimpse into what Camp RYLA 2015 was like for them and for the student delegates this past weekend (January 9 through 11).

Tim told the membership that 280 students from District 5910 attended Camp RYLA with 24 counselors and a number of adult sponsors as well. Student Counselors are selected from one year's participants to return and assist the following year.

Our club sponsored 16 students and the Spindletop Club sponsored four. Tim went on to express his appreciation for the support that our club provides.

Michael Perez introduced all the student-leaders and recognized the parents and family members attending today with them.  He explained that the RYLA Team members create back-to-back activities and a busy schedule of events that the counselors then make sure that those activities are completed by the participants.

Cindy briefly explained the schedule which included Community Group, morning chapel, and other scheduled activities.  She highlighted the ROPES Course and showed photos where students worked in teams to successfully accomplish tasks as a group, such as the "wooden skis" and the "spider web." ROPES Courses are designed to promote teamwork and trust.

Camp RYLA provides a setting and an atmosphere, wherein the participants aspire to acquire leadership skills and hone working well in groups.

Team RYLA members were obviously very proud of this year's Camp RYLA, and stated that "there is no way that Rotary members can fully grasp how uplifting this event was without being there. Regardless of how you feel about today's youth, if you had been at Camp RYLA, your faith in our future would have been restored," said Cindy.  She thanked the Club for continuing to provide funding for the students to experience RYLA.

The Board expresses thanks to the many Rotarians who contributed an extra meal ticket or more which allowed the students and parents to be our guests for this meeting. It was an important public relations effort and your generosity was much appreciated.

The Rotary Office will be closed on February 5 and 6 as the staff will be attending the Large Club Conference.
