The laws on "concealed carry" are discussed in many circles and debated in many arenas. It's time to have a presentation on the facts and fiction, the ins-and-outs, the "Myths and Truths." We welcome an expert on the topic, Sergeant Cody Guedry.
James “Cody” Guedry is a Sergeant with the Beaumont Police Department. He received a B.S. from Lamar University in 2005 and went on to become a Police Officer.
Since working for Beaumont, Cody has worked in several different divisions including Patrol, Street Crimes Unit, and his current position as Supervisor of the Police Community Relations Unit. As the public information officer, he works with local and national media outlets on a regular basis. He instructs in many different areas and is a member of the Beaumont SWAT team as an operator.
Your help is needed in restoring a treasured part of Texas - the Big Thicket! The Big Thicket Association is seeking Rotarians' assistance in planting 10,000 seedlings for the Centennial Forest project in 2016. This will also help restore the native Long Leaf Pine forest in the Big Thicket. The tree seedlings are very small and the tools needed to plant the trees are provided.
Kathryn Walker, project coordinator reported:
"We had a total of 80 volunteers from a variety of groups (Master Naturalists, Native Plant Society, Scouts, BTA) and planted 10,000 seedlings. And it was a beautiful day to be outside. Thanks for your support."

Directions from Beaumont to planting site:
Travel North on HWY 69…continue on Hwy 69 north past Kountze then turn left on 1003 (Honey Island)…turn right on FM 943 …at the Big Sandy Creek Unit sign stay to the right on FM 1276…continue past Dallardsville…turn left at FM 1276 on to Lily Road…follow the signs to planting site.
If you arrive later a Ranger can give you directions.
The Service Projects Selection Committee is again opening the process for submission of new service project ideas with which the club can become involved. We have done some good work at local agencies that needed some assistance. It was fun and very rewarding, and it's time to do more!
Now it is time to look ahead and consider where and how the Club can contribute to another hands-on project that can have an impact on our community. Give it some thought, talk to others and submit a proposal for consideration.
Promoting literacy is a goal of Rotary International and a favorite project of the Rotary Club of Beaumont. Each spring, Rotarians flood the first grade classrooms across Beaumont and share the love of reading and delivering a book for every child to keep for their very own. You want to be a part of this.
Sign up to take part in "Rotary Goes to School!" Instead of the normal lunch meeting on Wednesday, March 23, you'll enjoy a truly rewarding visit with a young child.
Volunteers should arrive by Noon at the school office. Bring a photo id in order to clear a security check if needed. You will be given a Dr. Seuss hat and escorted to the classroom where you will find the books ready to be shared with each child.
Rotary After Hours: A Lovely Evening on the Neches!

No, not a new Blue Badge, but Brenda Gray earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Rotary Science degree and Dean Lynn Castle presented it to her at the meeting on February 17, Brenda is now sporting a new emblem on her badge to signify the distinction.
In case you are not aware, even long-time Rotarians can earn advanced degrees. Who will be the next Master or Ph.D. degree candidate?
Pope Francis will celebrate the "Jubilee of Rotarians" on April 30th, 2016 in Rome with the Rotary International President, K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran. President Ravi said, "I believe this event is a tremendous honor that will raise Rotary’s status across the world."

We changed things up this week and had an in-house service project day rather that the regular Rotary meeting and speaker.
During "Rotary Has Heart" Service Day, 200 layette bags were assembled and will be sent to Nicaragua for women and newborn babies in need. This project is funded in part with a grant from Rotary District 5910 and matched with funds from the Beaumont Rotary Foundation and individual donors. (You can still make a tax-deductible gift by contacting the Rotary Office at 409-842-1913.)
Thanks to Sharon McCabe, Kathleen Alsup, and Chad Blanchard for ordering supplies for the bags and doing preparation work, and to Munro's for storing the layette bags until they can be shipped.
Rotarians also assembled small goodie bags that are used in the school education programs for Gift of Life and prepared a mailing for Nutrition & Services for Seniors as part of the event projects.
It was a very successful day for the Club and the agencies we helped. Everyone left feeling they had done some work to benefit others, and that always feels good.
