From time-to-time, you might have wondered where the money donated to the Beaumont Rotary Foundation is spent, but wonder no more! Not only are funds allocated to projects like layettes, water wells, community service work, and scholarships; it is also spent on the RYLA experience for sixteen exceptional students to attend, participate in, and learn from the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program.
The student participants and their parents are invited to join us for the meeting on January 10 as we hear about 2018 Camp RYLA and the experiences of the weekend. The program will be led by our energetic and exceptional team that took part as well. Come hear of the fun, see pictures, and welcome the students - perhaps future Rotarians - to the meeting to re-live the fun. You won't regret it!

Beaumont Rotary to Give Coats from OPERATION WARM!
On January 13, the Rotary Club of Beaumont is joining with the South Park Neighborhood Association and the Beaumont Health Coalition to host "Winter Wonderland." As you see in the picture above, it will be an afternoon of fun for the children at Alice Keith Park in South Park. The Rotary Club of Beaumont, using disaster relief donations, is purchasing and will distribute new warm winter coats and jackets to children whose families were impacted by the Harvey disaster.
Lynn Hill will chair the project and is asking for volunteers who can help with setting up and preparing, and then with distributing the coats. Plan to work the morning to prepare, or the afternoon to hand-out the coats, or both. You can begin to sign up now by clicking on the image below.

Our 1.2 million-member organization started with the vision of one man—Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on 23 February 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.
In the initial years of the organization, Rotarians learned about one another and the various diverse professions of the members by meeting in the offices, factories, businesses and firms of the club members. How about doing as one of the original members did back in the early 1900s?

In October, following the devastating floods brought to the area by Hurricane Harvey, the Rotary Club of Beaumont was contacted by Wayne Vidrine, President of the Rotary Club of Ville Platte, Louisiana. The members of the Ville Platte club expressed that they wanted to partner with us on a project to assist those in the area left needing assistance. They were especially keen on helping the children of the area in some way and because the "shoe project" for Martin Elementary was nearly completed, the Board welcomed the assistance of Ville Platte as our club decided to work with the Beaumont Health Coalition to fund coats for children. The Ville Platte club raised $2,100 toward this effort and presented a check to President Tim Sudela at the January 3rd meeting. Rotarians ARE people of action, and together we are funding 410 coats to be distributed on Saturday, January 13. If you can help, please sign up using the online process (see separate article)

"Remembering Our Astronauts"

On April 12, 1981, the Space Shuttle Columbia roared into a deep blue sky as the nation's first reusable space shuttle. After flying 28 missions, it was making its descent to Kennedy Space Center on February 1, 2003, when it began to disintegrate over East Texas and was tragically lost. The ensuing search over the next two weeks for the remains of the seven astronauts involved many of the local residents of Hemphill, TX, and resulted in the recovery and return of all seven astronauts to their families. Only about 40% of the shuttle was recovered.
Before each search crew went out, the chaplain prayed over the teams and felt compelled to recite Joshua 1: 6-9 which encouraged them "to be strong and courageous …. for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." They discovered later that the Mission Commander, Rick Husbands, had recited the exact same scripture to his family and crew before the mission.
The citizens of Hemphill decided to open a museum to remember the Columbia, its crew and the two searchers who lost their lives in the recovery efforts. Initially, the museum was planned to be housed in an 800 sq.ft. building next to the Hemphill library. After consulting NASA officials, it was recommended the museum be much larger. One of the local residents, A.J. Smith offered to provide the funds for a 3500 sq.ft. building if the museum would be named after his deceased wife – Patricia Huffman Smith.
The museum contains a 1/15th shuttle replica, a theatre showing 3D films from NASA, a digital learning center, space related items and artifacts including Laurel Clark's space suit, Ilan Ramon's diary and other personal items donated by the families of the astronauts. Ms. Gay said it takes about 1 1/2 hours to tour the museum, it's only about two hours north of Beaumont, and she encouraged all to come and visit.
