PROGRAM PREVIEW
January 3, 2018

Belinda Gay
Vice President
Patricia Huffman Smith Remembering Columbia Museum

Fifteen years ago, on January 16, 2003, the Columbia STS-107 mission lifted off for a 17-day science mission featuring numerous microgravity experiments. Upon reentering the atmosphere on February 1, 2003, the Columbia orbiter suffered a catastrophic failure due to a breach that occurred during launch when falling foam from the External Tank struck the Reinforced Carbon Carbon panels on the underside of the left wing. The orbiter and its seven crew members (Rick D. Husband, William C. McCool, David Brown, Laurel Blair Salton Clark, Michael P. Anderson, Ilan Ramon, and Kalpana Chawla) were lost approximately 15 minutes before Columbia was scheduled to touch down at Kennedy Space Center.

Belinda Gay, Vice President of the  Patricia Huffman Smith NASA "Remembering Columbia" Museum, will share the story of the STS-107 flight, as well as information related to the accident and subsequent investigation by the formal Columbia Accident Investigation Board, the recovery of the Columbia's artifacts and the story of how Hemphill, TX, came together to honor the memory of the STS-107 crew and shuttle with this museum.

The RYLA Team and students are packing their bags and making all the necessary preparations for RYLA 2018!

We thank the Rotarians who have been a part of the RYLA committee this year, making the plans and preparations for this student leadership experience possible:  BK Alemayehu, Jim Baxter, Lynn Castle, Cindy Cherry, Michele Cobb, Craig Escamilla, Rene Greenwald, Mark Hall, Teri Hawthorne, Bridget Johnson, Michael Perez, Sean Perrodin, Sharea Reed, Randy Shelton, Wes Shipley, Brandon Spears, Tim Sudela, and Alice Teeler.

Good wishes for a safe and enjoyable experience for all those attending the weekend event with the students: Tim Sudela, Michael Perez, Bridget Johnson, Jim Baxter, Bridget Johnson, Lynn Castle, Becky Mason, Chuck Mason, Mark Hall, BK Alemayehu, and Randy Shelton.  (With the frigid weather of the past few days, there should be plenty of VERY frozen ice cream this year!)

Thank you to Rotarian Roger Bemis, principal of Monsignor Kelly Catholic High School, who has arranged for a bus as transportation for the students.

We will get to hear all about the weekend and the learning experiences for the students, which is funded by your charitable donations of Service Above Self to the Beaumont Rotary Foundation, at our meeting on January 13.  If you can spare a meal ticket for one of our guests, please drop it in the container on Wednesday.   Thank you.

Beaumont Rotary to Give Coats from OPERATION WARM!

On January 13, the Rotary Club of Beaumont is joining with the South Park Neighborhood Association and the Beaumont Health Coalition to host "Winter Wonderland."  As you see in the picture above, it will be an afternoon of fun for the children at Alice Keith Park in South Park.  The Rotary Club of Beaumont, using disaster relief donations, is purchasing and will distribute new warm winter coats and jackets to children whose families were impacted by the Harvey disaster.

Lynn Hill will chair the project and is asking for volunteers who can help with setting up and preparing, and then with distributing the coats.  Plan to work the morning to prepare, or the afternoon to hand-out the coats, or both. You can begin to sign up now by clicking on the image:
