"Brandon began his public service in college, when he served as a messenger in the Texas Senate. After learning the value of hard work on his family ranch outside Conroe and working to fund his own education, he has applied his work ethic to a succession of roles. After serving as a policy advisor in the Texas Senate, he worked for the Attorneys General in both Texas and Oklahoma. Voters in Montgomery County first sent Brandon to the Texas House of Representatives in 2006 where over the course of six years, he served on multiple influential committees.
On May 10, 2014, the citizens of Senate District 4 voted overwhelmingly for Brandon Creighton to represent them in the Texas Capitol. Since he was sworn in on August 24 of the same year, Creighton has ably represented the interests of a district spanning Harris, Chambers, Jefferson, and most of Montgomery and Galveston Counties.
Since arriving in the Texas Senate, he has maintained his focus on the fundamental purposes of government, securing tax reductions and advocating for crucial infrastructure improvements in commercial waterways and ports."

WHAT'S AHEAD!
The first week of November has been designated as World Interact Week! On November 2, we will join with the two Interact Clubs we sponsor and celebrate their efforts and commitment to Service Above Self.
On November 9, the Club will have the honor of recognizing our heroes, the Rotarians who are veterans of any of the branches of the armed services. Our speaker will be Colonel Brad Bane, Commanding officer of the 842nd Transportation Battalion stationed at the Port of Beaumont.

Today, October 24 is designated as World Polio Day and is designed to bring attention to the progress made and the work still ahead to end this dreaded disease. Nakisha Burns, Public Relations Lane Chair, arranged for our Club to have a brief spot on News at Noon with Nicole Murray to spread the news on a local level. President Ted Moor and Zone Polio Coordinator Chuck Mason were happy to speak about Rotary's efforts and the progress of the cooperating organizations to End Polio Now.

Interact Clubs Need Donations
The Interact Clubs are again collecting supplies to create gifts for others. They request toilet paper rolls to fill with goodies, trinkets, and treats for local nursing homes and hospitals. They can also use left over gift wrapping paper, ribbons and yarn to tie the ends of these treats. Sheree Pierce, sponsor of the West Brook Club, asks that you bring items to the club meetings and/or the Rotary Office before November 10 so she can make a delivery to the Interact Mixer.

"Are Newspapers Dead?
Disruption in Media and Southeast Texas"

Our speaker today was Mark Adkins, Publisher of the Beaumont Enterprise. Mr. Adkins was introduced by Vice President Joe Domino.
Mr. Adkins is the Vice President of Hearst Community Newspapers of South East Texas. With over 32 years in the media, Mr. Adkins was instrumental in one of the more successful newspaper-turnarounds at the San Francisco Chronicle.
Mr. Adkins covered an array of topics, which included a brief history, accelerated disruptions, recent changes and additions to the Beaumont Enterprise, and a glimpse of the future.
Quoting Ernest Hemmingway, Mr. Adkins opened with this slide which garnered smiles and chuckles across the room.
There has been such consistent and drastic changes to the media over the past two decades. Changes such as:
rapid digital expansion
Craigslist
Google, etc
social media
smart phones
television versus cable, wireless, home-shopping networks, VOD (video-on-demand), iTunes
Over the next 12 months, cable TV is expected to lose OVER 800,000 customers to other venues such as streaming and Netflix.
How Americans shop has affected conventional shopping (stores, malls, etc). It is no longer inconceivable that in the near future, Parkdale Mall could look like a ghost town.
