"The Pandemic Effect on Schools -
Past and Future”

The Region 5 Education Service Center website explains that the ESC includes 33 school districts and 6 charter schools, 178 campuses, and over 90,000 students. The Region 5 ESC is “Educational Professionals Serving Educational Professionals” and it is their mission is to serve educators, schools, and students in the many school districts of their assigned responsibility.
While we have all had concerns about the education of students during the COVID pandemic, it is likely that none of us can imagine the concern of a principal or a school district administrator through this crisis. As Executive Director of the ESC, Dr. Danny Lovett had the unique perspective to see the full impact of the pandemic on the educational system in the entire region. He and his team continued to serve the needs of the school districts through the many varied situations under which the districts were forced to operate beginning in March of 2020. He will also have the unique opportunity to assist the school districts as they begin the recovery process and formulate plans and procedures for the opening of schools in the fall of 2021.

We have three special national holidays in the next few months which we recognize with the "Show Your Colors" flag project. Co-chairs of the project, Pat Anderson and Gary Moncla, will soon be reaching out to secure volunteers for "Show Your Colors." Please check your calendars and "save the dates" of:
May 31 - Memorial Day
June 14 -Flag Day, and
July 4th - Independence Day.
This is a wonderfully patriotic way to start your own personal recognition of these days of great significance. Don't be concerned if you have not served as a flag volunteer before. You will be paired up with another person or team of people who have experience. You will have a great time being a part of this effort!

A New Cardinal N.E.S.T. is Under Construction at Martin Elementary!
What is a N.E.S.T.?
N.E.S.T. stands for Navigating Excellence Success and Triumph and it is an innovative learning lab.
Dedicated to precocious kids learning in areas applied to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math)
The elementary and middle school labs provide an ENGAGING environment that SPARKS “the love of learning” in the areas of STEAM-related fields
Includes faculty development that promotes STEAM-related curriculum that encourages teachers to seek additional certification in the STEAM areas.
The "Rotary Goes to School" project at Martin Elementary has continued both last year and this year in spite of the COVID restrictions.
A number of Rotarians worked last year affixing labels in the books for each Martin student. We boxed and mailed each child his/her summer reading books.
This year, Chair Lynn Hill has worked with the administrators of Martin Elementary to select the books for the children, and they have been ordered. One day next week (May 24-27) we will be ready to personalize a set of books for each child and will need a team of volunteers to assist. We will also create a bag of books, personalized for each child, for delivery to the school on June 9 following the Noon Rotary meeting.
Please consider this a "Save the Date" for June 9 so you can be a part of the summer book bag distribution at Martin.

The Rotary Club of Beaumont in cooperation with the Beaumont Rotary Foundation, Inc. is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for a scholarship designed for “Non-Traditional” students pursuing an associate degree or technical certificate at Lamar Institute of Technology. A designated committee of Rotary members will review the applications and select the top students to be interviewed for the one available scholarship. We appreciate your help in identifying qualified candidates for the scholarship which is generously supported by members of the Rotary Club of Beaumont.
Please read the criteria and requirements for the Non-Traditional Scholarship on the webpage: sitepage/rotary-non-traditional-scholarship/welcome and share the information with someone who fits the qualifications for the scholarship.

Did You Earn Perfect Attendance?
It is always a very special day when we have the opportunity to recognize club members for contributions to the successes of the year. President Cindy will present awards and recognition on June 30. She will also recognize those who have earned Perfect Attendance for the year either through meeting attendance on Zoom or in-person, an eClub makeup, serving on and attending committee meetings, working at a service project, or attending a makeup event.
Did you submit a makeup for every meeting you missed? Do you know you can see your attendance report on the ClubRunner app? If you have not downloaded the CR app, do it now and/or get assistance at the next Rotary meeting.
As we assure that no one is omitted in the recognition process, please help us by reflecting on the year (July 1, 2020-the present). If you deserve recognition, please call the Rotary office (409-842-1913) or send an email (admin@beaumontrotaryclub.org) saying you earned and deserve Perfect Attendance recognition.
Reminder: while we are proud of new members who have had Perfect attendance since joining, the award is only for members of the club with at least one full year of membership. That means you had to have joined BEFORE July 1 of 2020 to earn the award this year.

“Let's End Polio Now!”

End Polio Now Chair, Arne Almquist, opened the program today with a short video from 2018 concerning Rotary International’s quest to end polio in the world. Two and one half billion children have been vaccinated so far. In 2018 the numbers of cases in the world were down to 74 from 350,000 in the previous decade. The countries with remaining open cases are Afghanistan and Pakistan. Nigeria is in its third year of no new cases.
Arne introduced Chuck Mason who is the Regional End Polio Now Chairman. District 5910 has been exemplary in donations to the Polio Project. This is the second year in a row that District 5910 has been #1 in Polio Plus donations in Zone 25B. Last year (2019-20) 5910 club members donated $242,149 for the year. With the Rotary World Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the total contributions were matched and ended up being $895,563. Every donation turns into a much larger one.
This year District 5910 has a Club Challenge that can be made by June 15th. If club members donate $50,000, then two Rotarians will donate $75,000 additional. The Gates Foundation will then donate $250,000 for a total $375,000. All funds go to the Polio program. This is a 7.5 to one match that provides a great incentive to all 5910 Rotarians. Checks must be made payable to The Rotary Foundation or members can go online and donate through Clubrunner.
Arne Almquist cautioned members that Rotary cannot take their eyes off of the vaccination for polio. It is a disease that could reoccur quickly and Rotary needs to be ready to respond to any outbreak.
