ROTARY GOES TO WORK IS THE MEETING ON APRIL 23. There is no meeting at the Elegante' on April 23.
Second notices for January - June 2014 dues have been sent. If you have not paid your invoice, please check your email for it. Members without an email on file received a copy in US Postal mail. Please submit payment right away.
Rotary Goes to Work has become an anticipated highlight of the
year. Rotarians gather in another member's workplace to hear
and learn about the business - its mission, purpose, goals and
more. Like the early days, it is a chance to develop better
friendships and learn of the diverse professions represented in
the membership.
"Paul P. Harris, an attorney, wanted to create a professional
group with the same friendly spirit he felt in the small towns of
his youth. On 23 February 1905, Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. This was the first Rotary club meeting. They decided to call the new club “Rotary” after the practice of rotating meeting locations."

Help spread the word! The Playground has re-opened since the demolition of the the Oil City Brass building was completed. We heard on Friday, April 18 that the area was again considered safe for play and fun. It's been full of visitors since then!
(These stacks of boxes of shirts were donated by Infant Jesus Catholic Church youth group in Lumberton. Thank you!)
These are the final few days to gather and bring in tee shirts for Nicaragua. With thanks to PN Pat Anderson, we will load the trailer on Thursday afternoon and the shirts will be delivered to College Station for pick-up and transport to the Port of Houston.
If you still have shirts to donate for this great purpose, please deliver them to the Rotary Office no later than close of business on Wednesday, April 23.
Recently the Beaumont Enterprise had a special section recognizing "Outstanding Southeast Texans Under 40." The byline read, "Meet emerging leaders who are helping make the region a better place to live."
One member of the elite group was Rotarian Michael Perez. He was quoted,“If we are going to improve society, ensure a capable workforce and enjoy productive leadership in government in the future, we have to invest in the young people who will fill those roles in the coming years.”
We are proud to have Michael as a leader in our club and making Beaumont a better place to live and work.
Past District Governor Roger McCabe was delighted to introduce a special speaker and explain a wonderful Rotary-funded project, the Ambassadorial Scholar Program. He welcomed Jackie Becker who recently returned from her studies in Peru as an ambassador of Rotary District 5910.
Jackie shared information on what she learned while in Peru, some of which included living in and navigating a huge city, learning another language, tasting and enjoying different foods and a culture so different than that which she knew. She worked in a medical facility and with children in different capacities.
She spoke of tutoring children, making a difference in the lives of others, no matter how menial we think our contributions are, and speaking for the marginalized wherever one might be.
Jackie made everyone in the room proud to be a Rotarian, knowing that Rotary - each one of us - provides experiences that are priceless, creating a better world for all of us.
