Join us for the 2017 Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 13! The food will be scrumptious and the entertainment, heartwarming. We are excited to welcome the music students and choir from Martin Elementary to perform their favorite holiday tunes for us to enjoy. Paul Vick will be with us to lead a rousing Rotary Chorus sing-a-long. And the event will conclude with the surprise announcement of the President-Nominee, selected to lead the club in 2019-2020.

Bring the gift to the meeting on Wednesday, please as we will be delivering to the school before the dismissal for the holiday.

The weather was a bit chilly but Rotarians, family and friends, each with a giving heart were warm and smiling about helping the Salvation Army with the Red Kettle Drive, especially in this year of such great need.

Also, a month or more ago, someone left car keys on the table. It has a key fob that does not identify the owner, but the make of car. Please check if they might belong to a guest you brought to the meeting with you.

"Myth, Magic, & Mojo"

Art in some form existed around 60,000 BC. Why the art was done is something to ponder and suggests many different theories. What we do know today is that where we live, how we live, and what we do all give creative voice to popular culture and art in various forms.
Keith Carter views our area as part of the Deep South because of the green vegetation, animals that exist here, the diversity of the people (Mexican, Black, Rednecks, etc.) that creates a kind of gumbo culture.
“The literature of the area is imputed by the soil.” Folklore is common and Southerners love stories: folklore, legends, myths exist in multitudes. Authors have collected myths and published them for future enjoyment. One book about dog ghosts specifically highlights common black culture where the myth exists that if a person is in need of protection, a dog ghost comes to their aid. Another protection against evil is putting colored bottles on trees to trap the evil and keep it in the bottle so it cannot escape.
Music in the Deep South also exhibits where we live. From Muddy Waters, Janis Joplin, Gatemouth Brown, to the Winter Brothers comes music that represents the culture here. Muddy Waters sings about getting his “mojo” which is a spiritual spark that protects him. The term mojo has been around a long time with different spellings but always the same meaning.
In the visual arts, there are many nationally known artists from this area. In much of the art the areas that are prominent come from what we see or what is grown here: landscape, swamp, birds, wood and other animals prevalent to the area. One local artist, Fox Harris, had no idea why he did the art that he did but he felt it kept his mind off of his troubles. In this sense he had a type of generic memory. The Art Museum of Southeast Texas has a permanent display of Harris’ work.
One of Keith’s “projects” has been getting to know Mr. Jones and taking photographs of him. Mr. Jones has no car, walks everywhere in about a 2 mile radius, lives on a small pension, has a sense of dress and is content with this restrained life. As Keith has grown to know more about him, he has come to the determination that “Mr. Jones’ life is of great value” and he will keep photographing him until one of them is no longer here. What a wonderful message for us all.
