"In 1823 Stephen F. Austin hired ten men he called "rangers" to conduct a raid against the Indians. On 24 November 1835 the Texas legislature created a police force of three companies, fifty-six men each, known as Texas Rangers. Their numbers and reputation rose and fell, influenced by threats to the Texas Republic and governmental economy. Organized along military lines, the rangers had no uniforms in the nineteenth century. Later they began to wear suits with the ubiquitous cowboy hat."

This week's speaker submitted such an understated biography that it demanded an Internet search to learn more. It did not take long to learn that Joe Haralson is considered to be the "Ranger's Ranger," the elite of the elite.
"Haralson is the longest-serving member of the Texas Rangers. He has no desire to retire any time soon from the legendary 150-officer force born as Texas rebelled against Mexico. After leaving the Army, where he was awarded a Bronze Star, Haralson became a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety. Nine years later, in 1981, he became a Ranger. He's been based in Texas City ever since, and worked in about 35 counties." (Dane Schiller, the Houston Chronicle)

The Interact Clubs are again collecting supplies to create gifts for others. They request toilet paper rolls to fill with goodies, trinkets, and treats for local nursing homes and hospitals. They can also use left over gift wrapping paper, ribbons and yarn to tie the ends of these treats. Sheree Pierce, sponsor of the West Brook Club, asks that you bring items to the club meetings and/or the Rotary Office before November 10 so she can make a delivery to the Interact Mixer.

The second annual Wine Down With Rotary has already been deemed a success! We are still paying final invoices and collecting the last contributions, but if judged by the amount of fun and the large crowd of 250 people, it was indeed successful!
Thank you to Allen Lea, Chair, for countless hours of work, and to all those on the committee who readily and eagerly took on various parts of the event as their responsibility. We thank all who purchased tickets, were sponsors and donors, took part in the raffle, and promoted the event to friends and colleagues. It was a success because of Rotarians who made it so!
