The Gander, Newfoundland 9/11 Story

On Sept. 11, 2001, thousands of airline passengers from around the world were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, when U.S. airspace was closed following the terrorist attacks. The extraordinary way the citizens of Gander welcomed and cared for these strangers is the topic of the book, The Day the World Came to Town, by Jim DeFede.
As the 20th anniversary of that date approaches, the Rotary Club of Littleton is honored that Claude Elliott, mayor of Gander at the time, and author Mr. DeFede will speak to our club about the events following the terrorist attacks.
Please join us via Zoom to hear this remarkable story:
Tuesday, August 31, at 12:30 pm
To RSVP and receive the Zoom link, please send your first and last name to LittletonRotary@comcast.net no later than Monday, Aug. 30.
Mr. Elliott was first elected to the Gander Town Council in a 1990 by-election and has served in municipal office since that time. He was elected Deputy Mayor in 1993 and accepted the Mayor’s seat in 1996, when his predecessor was elected Member of the House of Assembly for Gander District in the Provincial Legislature. After serving 21 years, Mayor Elliott retired on September 26th, 2017. In addition to his official duties, Mayor Elliot also served his community as past-president of the Rotary Club of Gander.
