YOUR SHOT OF PROTECTION: HOW VACCINES TRAIN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM TO FIGHT DISEASE

Aimee Pugh Bernard:

Aimee Pugh Bernard, PhD, is an assistant professor in the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Colorado Anschutz medical campus (CU AMC), the executive director of the CU School of Medicine (CUSOM) Human Immunology and Immunotherapy Initiative, and the faculty director for the Think Like a Scientist (TLaS) after-school community outreach science program. Aimee’s career is dedicated to teaching, science communication, pro-science advocacy, and community outreach. In all her roles, Aimee strives to serve as a positive influence in medical and science education, public policy, and the increased acceptance of science and immunization within the community.

Favorite Ice Cream – malted milkball or salted caramel oreo – I can’t decide!

Marina Good:

Marina Good is a graduate student in the department of immunology and microbiology. Marina works in the Guthmiller Lab at CU AMC, which broadly focuses on host-pathogen interactions in the context of immunity. Her research is geared towards understanding the interactions between the immune system and influenza infection. She basically works as a detective, hunting influenza viruses that interact in interesting ways with the immune system, whether it’s in humans or other animals. Outside of the science community, she enjoys being active and outdoors as much as possible. In her roles as a student and science communicator, Marina believes that collaboration, communication and multiple perspectives are invaluable resources, and strives to inspire curiosity and conversations about science.

Favorite Ice Cream – A nice dark chocolate is my go-to, but mint chocolate chip or coffee in the summer!
