HMS - HELPING MOTHERS SURVIVE AFTER BIRTH IS COMPLETE

The mission of this project is to improve the quality of care the day of childbirth for the women and newborns in Loreto, Peru by equipping birth attendants with the skills needed to save mothers’ lives.

Loreto is an under resourced region and covers almost one third of the territory of Peru at over 140,000 square miles and is only accessible by plane or boat. Access to skilled birth attendants is one of the great challenges for the people of Amazon River basin.  Loreto carries one of the highest maternal mortality rates in Peru. 

HMS is a train-the-trainer program developed by Jhpiego (Johns Hopkins University Affiliate) using clinical standards and the latest evidence in conjunction with WHO standards. The program uses the proven effective learning techniques of simulation, case-based learning, practice and review.  Initial 1 to 2 full day workshop training is followed by low-dose, high frequency hands on skills practice and case review.
