Welcome to the Shawnee Rotary Club!
For the next year, Rotary International will focus on The Magic of Rotary. Most cultures throughout the world and throughout history have held the concept of magic in some regard. Whether conjuring up feelings of reverence, fear, fascination, or delight, "magic" makes an undeniable impression on those who have witnessed and experienced it.
Modern approaches to explaining magic seem to stem from a practical standpoint. Some cite magic as "science we just don't understand yet" when looking back at what once was mystic through a lens of centuries of acquired knowledge. In its most commercial form, magic and its practitioners perform carefully planned illusions to thrill their audiences, most of whom understand there to be some "trick" behind it while still enjoying the intended effect. Granting a small wish or fulfilling a simple need can also hold a bit of magic for a recipient on the verge of losing hope.
Regardless of its purpose, the implementation of magic requires a little bit of cleverness, a lot of planning, an understanding of the world around you, and intentional application. Those who seek to use its effects to make an impact diligently put in the work in preparation for the action, one that hopefully extends far beyond the time and place of the moment.
As People of Action, Rotary members seek to add some magic to the communities around them and to those whom the clubs serve around the world. For example, the Shawnee Rotary Club supports our local students through scholarships, leadership opportunities, and education projects, but we also have an impact on children overseas still at risk of contracting polio, a debilitating disease nearly eradicated here at home but still very much a concern in pockets of the globe.
We gladly welcome you to contact us here or visit us as guest at an upcoming meeting at noon on Mondays at Paul's Place and find out how you can join us in making magic here and abroad.
