The Oct. 10, 2013 meeting of the Rotary Club of Chickasha opened with a prayer, pledge and song.
Guests included Michael Butler.
Prayer concerns included Rotarians Bill Hodges and Jim Glaze and Don Pittman, father of club member Jerry Pittman.
Courtesy of Tom Adams, the John Deere Gator that the club will give away on Dec. 12 is parked outside FCC for members to inspect. President Greg reminded Rotarians that each member is responsible for selling a minimum of $5 tickets. The Gator will make appearances at several community events in the coming weeks and Rotarians can sell their tickets at these events. A sign up list is being circulated.
Rotarian of the Day was Mark Millsap who introduced himself as guest speaker.
Mark is on the Festival of Light Board and gave the club brief history of the Festival and what changes are in store for this year. Opening night is Saturday, Nov. 23 in Shannon Springs Park, which will be open to visitors from 6 pm to 10 pm Sunday-Thursday and 6pm-11pm Friday and Saturday through New Year's Eve.
The first Festival was held in 1993.It has grown to include more than 3.5 million lights.
The Festival no longer has a paid director but relies entirely on a volunteer board.
Mark said last year's festival hosted bus tours from 5 states, two weddings and dozes of marriage proposals among its guesstimated attendance of 250,000 visitors.
More than 2,000 cinnamon rolls and 5,000 cups of hot chocolate were consumed at the festival last year.
The bottom line profit in 2012 was $80,000, which has allowed the FOL board to spend $50,000 on the Big Tree, replacing lights and adding motion lights. The city reburshed the tree and installed a ladder making it easier to climb the 172 feet to the top.
Volunteers are needed between now and opening night to help put lights out. Gate workers are needed for the run of the festival and then volunteers will be needed after it is done for the year to take down and store lights and displays.
The board is printing up 30,000 handouts that will have coupons to be handed out at the main gate to the park.
The meeting ended after recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
