Working Together for Literacy

Helen Domsky presented a very interesting talk regarding the 2010 Literacy Program in our community and throughout the north. Actually, literacy is a major concern throughout the Province and is being addressed by Helen Domsky, through Government initiatives such as the current "Read Now BC" program, which is part of British Columbia's Literacy Action Plan. a full 40% of all adults have illiteracy problems that affect them through all aspects of their lives from reading medical prescriptions, recipes and their ability to successfully compete for job advancement in their work place. In Prince George programs are provided through both the College of New Caledonia and the Native Friendship Centre to assist people in solving some of their literacy problems. In many cases, these programs are provided free of charge, with the assistance of government funding. Programs include "Train the Trainer" to assist employers in helping their employees to improve their skills for work and advancement in the workforce. These Literacy Programs are currently funded into 2011. The Nechako Rotary Club is very active in supporting Literacy Programs through our "Raise a Reader and Dictionary" programs as examples. Rotarian and Past President Isabel Fleck thanked Helen for her presentation with another donation being made to our Polio Plus Program.
