Mentor Me

Jolene Shepard is the "Mentor Me" coordinator in Prince George for the United Way program in Northern BC.
Jolene was raised on Vancouver Island in a "Logger" family.
She tried her hand as a Sheep Herder when the Forest Industry used sheep to eat the vegetation that created competition for young seedlings in newly reforested areas.
When the Forest sector stopped using sheep for this silviculture practice, Jolene tried her hand at "Berry Farming" and traded this occupation for the job of "Mentor Me" coordinator with the United Way.
Jolene is still convinced she wants to be a farmer, but in the mean time, she is very dedicated to working with young people by matching them with mentors in Prince George.
The Mentor Me program, has people with work skills and practices in the business sector, that are prepared to spend a minimum of 6 hours over a three month period of time, to coach, council and demonstrate their skills to young people that have yet to make career choices.
Jolene works with these people and some of the youth in Prince George to match these skills with the specific young people's needs. These young people spend the minimum 6 hours learning some of the job attributes from the volunteer mentors.
The program helps these young people to make some of their career choices and the required educational requirements necessary for such a career.
The program has been performed for many years through various formats, usually coordinated through the schools, CNC and UNBC, with considerable success.
