McLeod Lake Indian Band

Chief Derrick Orr, the youngest Chief ever to be elected to the position in the McLeod Lake Band provided some interesting background regarding his past two years as Chief of the Band as well as the previous 8 years working for the Band and Council. Chief Orr is only 35 years old, and assumed the role of Chief of the McLeod Lake Band two years ago. The past two years have been very unsettled for the Band due to the economic turmoil experienced in BC. However, the good news is that conditions have bottomed out and beginning to improve nicely for the Band with receipt of some substantial money's owed to the Band as well as an additional allocation of timber for their Forest Company, Dus Cho Logging. Chief Orr indicated his goal is to improve the literacy and growth of youth in the Band as well as to encourage the return of many of the Band members to their native homeland located on the northern shores of McLeod Lake. The membership is currently spread from the Indian Reserve #1 to Prince George, across Canada and some in the USA. The Band population is about 462 people. Rotarian and Past President Larry Parker thanked Chief Orr for his presentation with a donation to our Polio Plus Campaign.
