Going Green at UNBC

Danielle Smyth is the Sustainability Manager of The Green University Centre at UNBC.

UNBC has been identified as a "Green University" since opening in 1994.  One of the Trademarks of UNBC is their Environmental Teaching.  Danielle moved to Prince George in 2007 to pursue her Master's Degree of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies, which she completed in 2009.

UNBC has demonstrated Leadership in Environmental programs through major initiatives including their Renewable Energy Program, utilizing Bio Energy, including:

                              Heating with recycled fuels (Wood Pellets)

                              Bio Energy Gasification in 2011 

                              Plans for Bio Energy Electrification in 2014 

UNBC has been successful in reducing their Natural Gas requirements by 85% through these initiatives.

The Environmental studies and teaching focus on the 3 R's:  Reduction; Reuse; Recycling.

They have introduced a Composting Program since 1995, and are active in providing support for the local agriculture community in growing products local, as well as supporting the local "Farmer's Market" in the sale of these products.

UNBC interacts with local Recycling companies, the City of Prince George and the Public in promoting greater Environmental programs.  However, Prince George recycling is still the "Tip of the Iceberg" with a long way to go to catch up to many of our southern communities.
