Cops for Cancer

Dennis Nore, representing the Canadian Cancer Society, and Cpl. Mike Stevenson representing the PG RCMP, made a presentation regarding the Cops for Cancer 2009 "Tour de North." The Tour de North is a program provided by the police since 1994 in an effort to raise funds for pediatric cancer research and programs for support and encouragement to young children with cancer. The Tour de North covers a total of 830 kilometers from Prince George to Prince Rupert. Police members from the northern communities do some serious training to endure the average 8 hours per day ride on bicycles, where they average approximately 53 kilometers per hour. The ride is strenuous and the group cannot wait for any stragglers, so each participant must get themselves in shape for the ride. The course is conducted over the period of 7 days and nights. Cpl. Mike Stevenson has completed this Tour de North four times. Dennis Nore indicated that a sum of $1500 per week is required to assist a family during the period of months spent through rehabilitation of their child with cancer. A donation of $5,000 will generally cover the entire cost for one child's rehabilitation. Rotarian Hugh Nicholson thanked Dennis and Mike for their presentation with a donation to our Shelter Box Canada program.
