Dan Harty from Covanta Energy discussed the role he and his company plays in converting waste to energy and disposal of hazardous waste. Covanta seeks to provide sustainable waste disposal solutions in the communities they serve.
Covanta is one of the world’s largest owners and operators of infrastructure for the conversion of waste-to-energy (known as “energy-from- waste” or “EfW”), as well as other waste disposal and renewable energy production businesses. Thecompany name represents the cooperation and advantages inherent in the partnerships we form to provide sustainable waste disposal solutions  for the communities and businesses they serve. Covanta operates and/or has ownership positions in 44 energy-from-waste facilities, primarily located in North America, and 20 additional energy generation facilities, including other renewable energy production facilities in North America. They also operate other waste management businesses complementary to our core EfW business. Covanta EfW facilities produce electricity for approximately one million homes in communities across North America.

Dan also focused on mercury waste disposal in Littleton. He explained that the 'white shed' in the Littleton dump is there to recycle hazardous materials including the mercury from florescent light bulbs. He encouraged all of us to drop off all of our burned out bulbs in the bins in from of the shed so Covanta can properly recycle the material preventing contamination in the ground. Dan explained that the shed and the disposal of the bulbs is provided at no cost to the town by Covanta.
