pieces".  Also "thanks' if somebody was able to cove the tv show.  If somebody has a picture of the Jan.  Students of the Month,
would you please send me a copy?

I will put together an agenda for the 1/21 meeting.  Let me know of any points that should be
included.  All for now.

Cohen Receives "Service Above Self"

Paul Cohen received the Charles and Carla Keen "Service Above Self" Award at the annual Holiday Luncheon on December 16, 2019.
It was the first time the award included the names of Charles and Carla Keen in recognition of their significant contributions to the club.
Paul, the Chelmsford Town Manager, has been a constant, significant contributor to our club.  It is particularly notable because his job
requires him to put in long, demanding days.  The award was presented by District 7910 Governor Pam Anastasi and President Allen Thomas.

Stop Hunger Now

The Chelmsford Rotary Club and over 100 student volunteers from Chelmsford High School teamed up after school on Tuesday April 7th to package 11,000 meals for Stop Hunger Now.  That organization was founded in 1998 and has provided 180 million meals in 65 countries.  This year 45 million meals have been provided and $9 million in donated vitamins and medical supplies have been distributed. Students set up the packaging stations, filled packages, sealed them and boxed them for shipment.  Each package contains rice, soy, a vegetable mix and a pack of vitamins and feeds six people.

The Rotary Club supports the Chelmsford schools in a variety of ways each year.  They provide 400 dictionaries to third graders.  They donate to both the Chelmsford High School Alumni Association's Scholarship Fund and the Town of Chelmsford Scholarship Fund.  They send sophomore students to the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) each year and they honor high school "Students of the Month" and "Students of the Year".  Those interested in club membership are invited to attend a meeting.  Meetings are held at the Chelmsford Radisson on Mondays at 12:15 p.m.

The CHS Alumni Association hopes to hire a director to carry on the various programs.  The current dues structure is no longer provides adequate financial support for the continued growth of the organization.  The community will be hearing more about the campaign as it gets further underway.

Moriarty Welcomed as Rotary Member

Three Good Speakers At Our Meeting On 3/31/14

Posted by Allen Thomas on Apr 04, 2014

We had three good speakers at our meeting on 3/31, Kris Ansin , the Executive Director of the Mali Health Organizing Project, returned to be presented a check from the club to support the project.  Kris spends two months in Mali each year and spends the rest of the year in the U.S.A raising funds and  taking care of the business side of the project.  Each year, some 2,000 children from the slums are provided health care twice a year in an attempt to decrease the high infancy mortality rate.       The second presentation featured Paula Bye, Executive Director of the Paul Center and a club member, and Brian Reidy, a member of the Board of Directors at the Paul Center.  The 16 acre facility provides educational, social and recreational services throughout the year, though their summer program is best known.  Some forty-five area communities are served by this local organization.  What could we do to help??

The February 3rd Rotary Club meeting featured the January "Students of the Month". Rob Geada explained how belonging to the marching band gave him confidence and created a family atmosphere to help him be successful in school. He was Drum Major this year and hopes he created the the same welcoming atmosphere for new band members this year. Nikki Santanakrishna has been captain of the diving, gymnastics and tennis teams. Participating is sports helped her learn time management and academic work in math and science helped her develop problems solving ability. She hopes to become a sports doctor. Nick Arena hopes to become a civil engineer. He was greatly influenced by his grandfather who enjoyed making furniture and by Mr. Greenfield, his Industrial Technology and Design teacher. He has learned that patience is important to success. Jennie Pisarik has been a three season runner. She credits coaches Jack Lang and Brian Crane for helping her to become well-rounded. She feels that she has learned how to be disciplined and to motivate others. She wants to major in Physical Therapy. Joseph Chen wants to be a computer science major in college. He learned that being in the orchestra helped him to learn collaboration in a diverse society and that it is important for everyone to make a contribution to the society, as a whole. Erin Lucey explained how she has greatly influenced by her father. He has been a very strong person despite his body being weakened by disease. He has stressed that she should follow her passion, as he did earlier in his life when he created a Chinese major at the University of Massachusetts and that allowed him to go to China to teach English. Erin has also learned a lot from her experiences in Model UN competition under the leadership of Mr. Greene.

ROTARY MEETING OF 1/28/13

Posted by Allen Thomas on Jan 28, 2013
The club meeting on Monday was interesting.  David Lantagne of Heritage Construction was welcomed as a new member by President Patrick Kimera and membership chairman Leonard Doolan.  Selectwoman Pat Wojtas spoke to the members about the Chelmsford Military Covenant.  She thanked the club for the support given in the past and expressed hope for continued support in the future.  Leonard Doolan thanked people who supported the blood mobile last Thursday that resulted in the harvesting of over 100 pints.  President Kimera reminded board members of the meeting on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
There were two featured speakers.  Scott Graves, a member of the board of directors of "Every Person Has a
Story" (EPHAS), introduced G. Ryan Ansin to explain the program.  The organization was organized in 2010 and has developed a model that has been built and tested at some 32 sites in 12 countries. He focused on the recent work being done in Juba, the capital city of Southern Sudan.  The idea is to teach photography and skills in journalism using local people to run the curriculum.  The goal is to show the city and its people in a balanced way, focusing on daily life.
By doing so, the rest of the world can see the good that is taking place as well as the problems.  For the local population, the program can create employment opportunities.  Often, the images that are sent throughout the world are negative and not totally representative.
The second speaker was Todd.  He spoke about happiness and the need to love yourself.  He explained that we are often driven by the need to achieve and sell out happiness for success.  People need to feel special and loved.  Instead, they are often mean to themselves and become addicted to their work.  It is, he said, hard to break that cycle.  What often works is to explain that, if one does not change, their children will be like them - unhappy.

James. S. Sanzi - Featured Speaker For 1/14/2013

Posted by Allen Thomas on Jan 13, 2013

ImageThe featured speaker at today's Rotary meeting was James. S. Sanzi, Esq., Senior Philanthropic Advisor for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  Several members felt that he was one of the best speakers that we have ever had.  He explained how Danny Thomas and a group of wealthy Lebanese businessmen started the hospital for those with pediatric cancer in Memphis, Tennessee.  Because of generous support from the American people, there are not costs for patients.  They don't pay for treatment and will be flown to the hospital, if necessary.  Most patients are out-patients because they do better in their own environment with support from friends and relatives.  Patients are usually referred by their own oncologist.  Because the hospital benefits from support from all parts of the world, they share their data and the products of their research as a way to "give back".  The hospital deals with some 7,500 patients a year and since it opened in 1962, the survival rate for patients increased from 20% to 80%.

Other Announcements: January 14, 2013

Members were invited to help interview sophomore candidates for the 2013 District 7910 RYLA program or to serve as volunteers at all or part of the program which will run from June 28th - June 30th.  Members were also reminded of the March 22nd district public relations dinner and were asked to  suggest local candidates for public relations recognition.

December 2012 - Students Of The Month

Posted by Allen Thomas on Jan 06, 2013

The December "Students of the Month" were honored at the January 7th meeting of the Chelmsford Rotary Club.  The Emerson House students were Zach Lattimore and Mary Kosewski.  Lattimore read an college application essay that he wrote.  He stressed that life is precious and therefore it is important to be compassionate in dealing with loved ones, friends and others.  Kosewski shared how she decided to focus on three CHS activities: secretary for the class of 2013, mock trial and tennis.  She found mock trial to be especially challenging and rewarding and noted that the team earned "Elite 8" ranking last year.  Bridget Doherty and Jeremy O'Donnell represented Hawthorne House.  Bridget told of her involvement in chorus and how taking voice lessons helped her to qualify for the treble choir and how singing helped her confidence to grow.  Jeremy talked about the apparent contradiction of being on the football team and in theater productions.  He started with minimal roles in theatrical productions and developed so he earned major roles.  In football, he felt he did not do the off-season work that he should have and thus did not get a lot of playing time.  He believes  that the two experiences were equally valuable.  Victoria Moore and Zach Straeffer represented Whittier House.  Moore explained how she was not a varsity track runner, but made major individual improvements in the sport.  She credited support from her teammates and her coaches.  Straeffer became deeply involved in set and lighting design at C.H.S. and also became an important part of the television crew that broadcast football and Lowell Spinners baseball games.  He credited these activities with helping his leadership skills to grow.

COHEN AND REIDY HONORED

Posted by Allen Thomas on Dec 10, 2012
The Rotary Club of Chelmsford hosted Rotarians from Westord and Billerica and invited guest for their annual holiday concert at their last meeting. Each year, the musical groups from Chelmsford High School play for this event and "Service Above Self" awards are made. This year, the club chose to recognize Brian Reidy and Paul Cohen. Reidy has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Paul Center since 2009. He helped to replace a cabin at the Center which was sponsored by the Rotary. He has served the Chelmsford Business Association as Director, Vice-President and President and was recipient of their "Member of the Year" award. He is Co-Chair of the Chelmford Parade Committee and has served on the committee since 2007. He currently serves on the Chelmsford Board of Appeals. He has raised funds by participating in the New England Parkinson Foundation and the Multiple Sclerosis bike rides. He has also published a book, "The Stone Mason's Dreams", a story about life in New England. Paul Cohen became Town Manager in 2006 and has been a successful leader who "sees the big picture". He recognizes the varied interests in town and sees what needs to be done. He has foresight and "plans for the future while meeting current needs and being respectful of the past." During a very difficult economic period, he has provided leadership as the town has added open space, reformed the municipal health insurance, renovated the center and north town halls, restored its bond rating, started to move the Department of Public Works to a new location, moved to up utilities underground in the center, approved a new center fire station etc. He is a fine example of "Service Above Self." Music for the occasion was provided by the vocal jazz ensemble and the treble choir, under the direction of Mr. Carl Rondin; part of the orchestra, directed by Ms. Kate Comeau; and part of the band, directed by Mr. Matthew Sexauer.Image

ROTARY HEARS ABOUT HAITI

Posted by Allen Thomas on Oct 14, 2012
ImageLaurae Richards of "Servants For Haiti" made a presentation to the Rotary Club of Chemsford at their most recent meeting.  After visiting Haiti in 2000 and seeing the extreme poverty there, the organization was founded in 2005.  Today, the organization is committed to the long term recovery of the island through three programs.  First, they provide the people with instruction in starting a business and funding.  Initially, they can receive a loan ranging from $250 to $1,000.  If they pay it back in a timely fashion, they can receive a larger loan.  Through their second program, they provide tuition assistance to young people so that they go to college, trade school or medical school.  Finally, they provide hope for the future by helping the people to rebuild.  People can help "Servants For Haiti" by donating money, going on a work team, or holding or attending a fundraiser.  For additional information use www.servantsforhaiti.org or into@servantsforhaiti.org.       The Rotary would also like to see a member or call 978-256-8772 for tickets ($25 each) for their Comedy Night on Friday October 26th at the Chelmsford Lodge of Elks.
