At this week’s meeting, we’ll be honored with a presentation by Alexis Madrigal, a journalist in Oakland, CA and a staff writer at The Atlantic Monthly. He will be talking about his tracking of Covid-19 with us.


 

About Alexis Madrigal
 
Alexis Madrigal is a journalist in Oakland, California and a staff writer at The Atlantic Magazine. Previously, he was the editor-in-chief of Fusion and as a staff writer at Wired. He's been a visiting scholar a UC Berkeley's Center for the Study of Technology, Science, and Medicine and an affiliate with Harvard's Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society.

Madrigal authored the book Powering the Dream: The History and Promise of Green Technology.

He's currently working on a book about Oakland and racial capitalism in urban America and curates the 5it Newsletter, which covers emerging technologies and social dynamics through history and a general appreciation that the future will be as weird as the present.

Born in Mexico City, he grew up in rural Washington State and went to Harvard Univ.

Madrigal works out of the Murray Street Media Lab in Berkeley with novelist (and olive oil magnate) Robin Sloan.

Mimmo Malandra       
Mimmo Malandra  is an internationally recognized Italian saxophonist who works closely with Italian and European composers in order to enhance the expressive potential of the saxophone. He is a researcher of innovative techniques and of new musical languages. He attended masterclasses held by Claude Delangle, Eugéne Rousseau, Arno Bornkamp, Francisco Martinez, Alain Crepin and Vincent David, as well as saxophonists of the prestigious “Quartetto di Sassofoni Accademia.” He took part in courses with saxophone professors of the Conservatorio Superiore of Oviedo in Spain and of the Mannheim Musikhochschule in Germany. He deepens his studies on the methodology and technology of musical technique and on the anthropological psycho-pedagogical disciplines of music. 
 He has given concerts in various formations: saxophone and piano, saxophone and organ, as a soloist, with chamber ensemble, in saxophone ensemble, and in collaboration with many symphony orchestras. He won national and international competitions of classical and contemporary music. He is the dedicatee of many compositions of which gave the World Premier. Among the many awards he has received, there is the Prize Rotary Club for young talented musicians “International Rotary Club Young Musician”. He is frequently a member of juryand in national and international saxophone competitions sand he is a guest in national and international saxophone festivals. He has given concerts as a soloist in Greece, Switzerland, France, Austria, Belgium, Romania, Slovenia, Croatia, Palestine (Bethlehem), Hungary, Cyprus, New York and Italy. He is involved in the research and the spread of Italian music for saxophone with a particularly attention on contemporary music and on music for the cinema and the theatre.  He teaches saxophone in Italian public school and in various academies and holds master classes in Europe and lectures on Italian music for saxophone and the international contemporary music.                                                                                                                                                 
He participated in national and international television  recordings (RAI uno, RAI world) and  radio.                                He recorded a CD of world premiers in collaboration with some of the greatest contemporary Italian composers: Ennio Morricone, Nicola Piovani and Luis Bacalov Oscar Awards;  Sergio Rendine, the famous harpist Cecilia Chailly, the cellist Giovanni Sollima and music writers chamber of Marco Tutino, Marco Betta, Giovanni D'Aquila and Opera Lorenzo Ferrero writer. Music in NYC: Pavel Nersessian, Piano and Katrin Bulke, Soprano in ...
Katrin Bulke, as a proud graduate of Mozartum in Salzburg (Austria), has worked under supervision of masters such as Helmut Deutsch, Andreas Macco, Carmela Altamura and Valentin Peychinov.
Miss Bulke is quickly establishing herself as a strong and talented Soprano in the world of opera and operetta. The popularity of her voice and her thrilling operatic performance brought her the audience award, by land slide, in the Caruso Competition in October 28th 2017 in NYC and the Grand Prix at the Concert Festival International Competition in January 2018.
Since her arrival to NYC in 2016, Miss Bulke has presented strong performances with ten different stage companies in roles such as: Rosina in Rossini ́s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Frasquita in Bizet ́s Carmen, Queen Elizabeth in Donizetti ́s Roberto Devereux, Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Amina in Bellini’s La Sonnambula, Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto, Blonde in Mozart’s The adduction of the Serail and Queen of the night in Mozart’s Zauberflöte (Carnegie Hall).
Her variety of repertoire includes characters such as Rosalinde in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus (Bavaria), Vitellia in La clemenza di Tito (Florence), Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni (Salzburg), Despina in Cosi fan tutte (Salzburg), Girl in Dark Waters (Salzburg), Annina in La traviata (Salzburg) and Octavie in Cleopatre (Riga, Latvia).
In 2018 Miss Bulke has been involved in projects around the globe such as: Soloist in “Spring Blossom 2018 Grand Gala” in David Geffen Hall – Lincoln Center (NYC), concerts in Moscow (Rus), Concert “Meine Lippen sie küssen so heiß” in Augsburg (D), Concert “Im weißen Rössl am Wolfgangsee” in St. Wolfgang (A) and Soloist in the Concert “Verdi ́s Recommendation” in the Nuova Fenice Opera House of Osimo (It).
