ONLINE: Weekly Meeting Apr 23 - Zoom

Dealing with Covid-19
Our Apr 24 Zoom Meeting will feature two charities doing great work during the pandemic – The East Side House Settlement, a trusted community resource that offers a continuum of programs to residents of the Bronx and No. Manhattan, and #INMYSCRUBS, a group of New Yorkers who wanted to make a difference in these most challenging of times.

The East Side House Settlement

Daniel Diaz became the Executive Director of East Side House Settlement (ESH) in January 2017; having previously served on ESH’s Executive Leadership Team since 2008. Since joining ESH in 2004, he has held multiple roles overseeing the agency’s school and community-based programs that provide lifelong learning services throughout the Bronx and northern Manhattan. Prior to his tenure at ESH, his work centered on services for at-risk and homeless youth throughout New York City. Mr. Diaz, born and raised in the Bronx, uses his personal awareness of this community to help steer the organization and serve the unique needs of its diverse population.

Mr. Diaz will be presenting on a specific NY Rotary Foundation sponsored project: “We saw the stark juxtaposition of American farmers having their vegetable crops go to waste due to supply chain disruption and economic collapse, while other Americans are on the brink of starvation due to food banks being overwhelmed and undersupplied.

The Dire Need
Our home State of New York and the Boroughs of New York City have disproportionately borne the economic, health, and social welfare brunt of COVID-19. Many New Yorkers are very sick, out of work, have depleted their savings, and are in dire need of feeding their families to survive.

One of the poorest districts in the United States is the South Bronx (38% of their community lives at or below the Federal poverty line – 49% of children). East Side House Settlement (ESHS) has been effectively serving this community for the past 125 years. Executive Director Daniel Diaz informed us that they need food to feed more than 5,000 families in his community immediately….”

#InMyScrubs

What started as a text thread between a group of leaders in tech, media, entertainment, and government trying to find a way to help the current situation in New York has now become a full fledged viral social campaign and non profit that's dedicated to feeding hospital workers with food from local restaurants. New York agencies, Scout Lab and Jump450 along with Celebrity Hat Milliner, Teressa Foglia, launched the #InMyScrubs Challenge, a social challenge that encourages people to donate to our GoFundMe account. Open Influence, a pioneer in Influencer Marketing has joined as of last week. All net proceeds go to paying for meals from local restaurants at-risk of shutting down.

The goal was to create part social campaign driving awareness to social distancing, and part fundraiser, which supported multiple economies (restaurants + hospitals). So far we've had over 6+M impressions to the #InMyScrubs hashtag since launch, and we've raised over $100k. In three weeks we've deployed over 10k meals using roughly 2 dozen restaurant partners. And we're just getting started.

We've finalized our 5013c status, which means that we can work with corporate donors who are interested in getting involved through in-kind and $$ donations. Wix, Attentive SMS, Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and Stephanie Gottlieb Fine Jewelry have all come onboard as corporate sponsors, to support our mission to keep local restaurants in business and hospital workers fed during this health crisis.
