A career software entrepreneur, Levi’s life changed dramatically in 1999 when his best friend came to the office one morning and announced the Chinese Communist Party had taken away his mother in Beijing to be tortured and “brainwashed.” This marked the beginning of his volunteer work to defend human rights in China. Two years later, Levi himself was detained in a Chinese jail outside Beijing for secretly meeting with Western reporters and protesting on Tiananmen Square. Over the past 20 years, Browde has been interviewed and quoted by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press, TIME Magazine, BBC, AFP, and other media outlets. He has spoken about Falun Gong and human rights in China at briefings on Capitol Hill in Washington DC and at the United Nations human rights sessions in Geneva, Switzerland. Browde studied East Asian Studies at Wesleyan University and is an avid supporter of traditional Chinese culture. He founded several software start-ups and lives in New York with his wife and two sons. A Sample of Appearances 1. Topic: Understanding Asian Community Series: Modern China and the Falun Gong Case Study
For thousands of years, China lead the world in culture, arts, science, and commerce. The
Middle Kingdom facilitated the interexchange of religion, philosophy, and goods across Asia and
Europe. Beginning in the mid-1800s, China fell into a time of unrest and destitution that gave
rise to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Under CCP rule, traditional Chinese culture and
society was decimated until the 1990s when a renaissance of traditional culture emerged inside
China at precisely the time that the CCP was also carving out a place on the world’s stage.
What exactly does this mean for modern Chinese society and its people? In this presentation
we’ll briefly examine recent Chinese history, and then take a close look at the nature of CCP
rule over China. Using the plight of the Buddhist-based spiritual practice of Falun Gong as a
primary case study, we’ll examine the impact of CCP rule on its people both domestically as well
as how they are received/treated abroad, particularly in the West.
