Thaddeus Stevens is a well known figure in American history. A preeminent antislavery fighter long before the Civil War (and long before Abraham Lincoln), he saw a chance to make the country into a true multiracial society. Too advanced even for most of his fellow Republicans, former Southern slaveholders hated him with passion. During decades, Stevens was considered as too radical, a view shared by many even today, for example in Steven Spielberg’s biopic “Lincoln” from 2012. Our speaker Bruce Levine changes this image in his biography “Thaddeus Stevens, Civil War Revolutionary, Fighter for Racial Justice” (2021), showing Stevens as a passionate proponent of racial justice and true democracy. Bruce Levine is the bestselling and prize-winning author of four books on the Civil War era and an emeritus professor of history at the University of Illinois.

The joint meeting of the Rotary Clubs of New York and Wiesbaden-Kochbrunnen will take place on October 13th, 1pm EDT / 19 Uhr MESZ.
