Three to four times a year, the Quitman Rotary Club dedicates a day to cleaning up trash along a 2-mile section of Highway 37. Once the cleanup is finished, the filled trash bags are neatly placed on the shoulder, ready for collection by Wood County authorities.
A team of 10 or more individuals takes on this 2.5 to 3.5-hour project, diligently clearing litter from the roadside shoulders all the way to the property fence line. It's a workout for the hands, backs, and legs, but we're up for the challenge. We avoid tackling this task during inclement weather or when the ground is soggy. Regrettably, there have been occasions when we've had to work in hot, humid conditions.
