On Saturday, May 2nd Montachusett Area Rotary club/Nashoba Valley Rotary club joined World Farmers in Lancaster to help build their greenhouse. Both clubs were approved for a local District Grant to assist Word Farmers expand their knowledge and program. World Farmers have been around for 40+ years and they advocate for and support immigrants, refugee and historically underserved small-scale farms from farm to market. Since 1984 their keystone program at Flats Mentor Farm (769 Main St Lancaster, MA) has been in place where immigrants and refugees from agrarian backgrounds find an opportunity to re-engage in farming as a way of life, ensuring food sovereignty for themselves and their families. Currently, supporting approxiamtely 300 farmers from 25 countries. World Farmers program provides access to land, farming infrastructure and technical assistance in agricultural production and marketing. There is no outreach, it is all word of mouth. Their rule is - they don't turn anyone away so they are able to grow their own land with veggies. You need to have a passion to be a farmer. Farmers typically age out at 68 years old across the country. There are many things to consider for infrastructure to function in a agriculture system. Such as the training, the soil, dealing with different pests promoting organic, seedling production, diversity of crops, how to work greenhouses and developing a mentorship. They have 7 land sites right now and are always looking for more land to support the farmers. Our Co-President, Neil Zanni explained he is going to train for 1 year with this program on providing how to create seedlings from a greenhouse to soil. These 300+ farmers sell their crops at farmers markets at wholesale for CSA programs, restaurants, schools, etc. To find more about this program their website is www.worldfarmers.org.
