This Meeting's Speaker: Brett Halloran
Founded in 1878, "The New York Wire and Vulcanite Co." now known as Okonite has more than 1,200 employees and six plants. The name "Okonite" comes from combining "OK" with "vulcanite" to form Okonite. He is based out of the Ramsey Plant. Brett worked at Fox Rothschild as an attorney prior to joining the company. Okonite just makes cable products for companies like PSEG. They are considered the "most expensive" company in this space and light the Statue of Liberty and the Pentagon with red, white and blue wire.
The company is nearing their 150th anniversary. They opened in Passaic at first. Then opened in 1924 in Paterson so next year is their 100th year celebration. They were formed shortly after Goodyear invented rubber coatings. The founder is an engineer and he released the rubber could be used for wire installation. They first started rubberizing telegraph wire for Samuel Morris. They were hired by Thomas Edison to produce Rubber insulated power cables.
The Paterson Museum is working to put together a permit exhibit there. The Paterson plant has 65 people working at it and is their smallest plant by head count. However, it is their most profitable because they are the last manufacturer that produces old technology like oil infused wire cables so it is considered critical infrastructure for places like Washington DC and New York City. They produce 50/50 copper and aluminum wires.
United Steel Workers Union are in the Paterson plant. They are an employee owned company as of 1976. Prior, they were the subsidiary of a corporate company. In Bankruptcy Court, an employee stock ownership was created and the company was bought from Bankruptcy. At that time, they were the biggest employee owned company in the country. Only their employees can be shareholders. They have paid back to employees over $150 million dollars when the employees retire. Last CEO, Victor Viaggio, resisted ever offshoring manufacturing after running the company for 62 years. Business has been booming because there is a push to underground cables and they are no longer producing overhead wires.
As a way to give back, they funded Valley Hospital's new cancer research facility. They also get involved when there is a natural disaster. They had employees go to Houston and Puerto Rico and donated money to these relief efforts.
