The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn recently heard a presentation by Mr. Michael Weaver, Principal of Forrest School, of the 5th Annual Breast Cancer Basketball Challenge which is scheduled for Saturday January 5, 2013 at Fair Lawn High School. This is the Challenge’s 2nd year at FLHS. The Breast Cancer Basketball Challenge was developed in 2006 to raise breast cancer awareness among female high school athletes (and their fans) throughout North Jersey. This event was recognized in April 2011 for its “exceptional contribution to the community” with the NJ Governor’s Jefferson Award for Health & Wellness.
This event will feature girls’ varsity teams from ten North Jersey high schools playing five games throughout the day. The day isn’t only about basketball; the 300 participating student-athletes will learn more about this disease. The key speaker at this event will be Kim Tanis, a breast cancer survivor and Head Coach of the Indian Hills Regional High School Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team. Coach Tanis will be in attendance for a fourth consecutive year to speak with each team during the post-game receptions about her diagnosis and battle against the disease to date. By sharing her story of survival with participants, it becomes more than five games for a cause, it becomes an educational event.
Coach Tanis’ words will be augmented by a gift bag at the end of the event that includes a “Breast Cancer Basketball Challenge” t-shirt and a variety of breast cancer awareness/educational items courtesy of Leigh Hurst, a breast cancer survivor and the founder of “The Feel Your Boobies Foundation”.
