Youth Exchange Student Welcomed!
The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn welcomes Jessica F., a Rotary Youth Exchange Program Student from Switzerland. Jessica’s exchange visit is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Zurich-Dietikon, Switzerland and Fair Lawn, USA through Rotary’s Youth Exchange Program. Jessica will be staying in America for the entire school year, attending Fair Lawn High School as a member of the Class of 2012. Jessica will be living with three Fair Lawn families during her time here in order to fully experience life in America as an “AmericanTeenager”.
Jessica arrived in the USA at the end of August and was greeted by members of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program and her host family. Since her arrival, Jessica has settled in with her host family and experienced a day in NYC, a walk around the Paterson Great Falls, an afternoon in Ridgewood and Glen Rock, a tour of the Columbia Bank headquarters, a lunch meet and greet with Fair Lawn Rotarians and of course Jessica took in the American Teenage Mall Experience. Jessica will be attending Rotary functions as her schedule allows and will be participating in the many Rotary Youth Exchange Programs that are scheduled for Rotary exchange students. Some of these activities include Rotary United Nations Day, Youth Exchange Program events with other students from nearby Rotary Districts and RYLA.
Prior to Jessica’s first day at Fair Lawn High School Mr. Matt Cahn, Vice Principle of FLHS and a member of The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn, met with her and was extremely helpful in creating a solid academic and culturally exciting schedule for Jessica as she experiences life as an American Teenager. Jessica also had the opportunity to meet some of the staff and faculty and tour the school prior to the start of the academic year. The entire faculty and staff of Fair Lawn High School have been warm and welcoming.
Rotary’s Youth Exchange Program is one of the ways that Rotarians can channel their commitment to “Service Above Self” through one of the five “Avenues of Service”, which form the foundation of club activity. This program fits in with the New Generations Service; this Avenue of Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities as RYLA, Rotaract and Interact, service projects, and creating international understanding with Rotary Youth Exchange.
