The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn has been highlighting Rotary International’s efforts, through the Rotary Foundation, to eradicate polio throughout the world.  Our past articles can be found in our story archives.  This month, we are proud to present a recent update on the progress made in this battle by Rotarians around the world.

The worldwide total of polio cases in 2010 is 706 vs. 1,604 for the same period last year.  Pakistan and Afghanistan have about the same number of cases this year as last.  However, the news is very good in the two other endemic countries; India has 39 cases compared to 395 at the same time last year and Nigeria tops that with 4 this year vs. 382 last year.    People who have contributed to this cause can be proud of what they have accomplished so far in this battle.

The Polio Plus drive is working and is now at $146M.  While great progress has been made, there is still work to be completed as we move to eradicate this disease.  The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is still seeking to meet the $200 Million Challenge to get to the last strongholds of polio so children will not be the victims of this disease.

The Rotary Club of Fair Lawn continues to support the international effort to rid our world of this disease.  Your support of our fundraising efforts will help meet the goal of defeating this disease.
