Foundation & Youth meeting minutes August 12th 2014

Chair : Peter Barfoot
Present : Geoff Penfold, David Johnston, Dan Schubert, Mike Munro
Meeting commenced at 8.45pm
Science Experience 2014/15 : It was resolved that we should ensure that all the local schools are aware of the time frames to apply to send students to this event. Perhaps a letter from the club to each school. Peter to check with Board on how this was done in past years.
NYSF  : Very pleasing to note that Jackson Davey has been selected as one of two reserves for this event for SA. He made it to the top 18 of 37 students in his interviews. We should know more in October if someone has withdrawn and Jackson can then be slotted in as a participant.
St Joseph’s School Sailing Team : Letter received regarding sponsorship to attend the Interdominions in New Zealand 28th of September - 1st of October to represent Australia.  Handed to Board
RYLA & RYPEN : Mike Munro has agreed to look after these two portfolios this year. He would like to get hold of some testimonials to encourage applications to be made to Rotary to be part of these programmes.
Aboriginal Women’s camp : Is going to be held in Jan 2015.  Our club has been speaking with Di Baker-Tag who is organising this event. Rotary is looking to be involved. We should be seeking TV stations to promote these good works getting Rotary’s badge out there.
ICAN : David Johnston : We had a discussion about this organisation and its works in and around Port Lincoln. It was generally agreed that it would be of some value to have someone from Rotary to be on their Management Committee to keep ourselves abreast of what the organisation is doing to assist young people who have become disengaged and at risk of leaving school early or not re-engaging in a pathway to employment. I have attached a copy of David’s discussion notes from his meeting with Kathryn Hardwick-Franco. Will also bring up with the Board.

Construction of outdoor, granite furniture from Wudinna Granite etc. Bike rack installations Geoff also produced some photo’s of  these items that he had seen whilst overseas. Available for club members to view – see Peter B.
Mike Munro :
Mike reminded us that Bendigo Bank are looking to either sponsor events or projects in conjunction with Rotary. They have $250,000 up for grabs.
Also the picture Theatre is going to put up a slide at the beginning of films promoting Rotary as a way of thanking us for assisting them. The electronic sign they require for advertising films on the front of building will cost aprox. $10,000.
The ‘Men’s Shed’ is looking to extend – Rotary could build in conjunction with Bendigo bank funding and the whole thing could be called the ‘Rotary Men’s Shed’.
The vehicle Simulator that is being bought to Port Lincoln for educating students about safe driving could be an annual event sponsored by Rotary every year. Why not ?

Meeting closed at 10.45pm
