Vocational Service is a description of the opportunities each Rotarian has to represent to fellow members the dignity and usefulness of his or her occupation. It also encompasses the obligations of each Rotarian to foster in his or her occupation the adoption and practice of high ethical standards and the dignifying of all useful occupations.  The Youth Service aspect of this portfolio focusses on providing opportunities for young people to develop their knowledge and leadership skills.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
The RYLA camp - which helps develop leaders by providing the opportunity for young 18-25 year old people to refine skills, explore pertinent topics with their peers and elders and share valuable expertise - is held in July each year at Nunyara, Belair and our Club is very happy to sponsor one or two young people each year, often from the Rotaract Club of Adelaide City.

The RYLA Celebratory Dinner at the end of the program each year is co-hosted by our Club and the Rotary Club of Adelaide. The evening's entertainment is a wonderful showcase for these inspiring young people.

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN)
Our Club regularly sponsors two students to attend the RYPEN weekend at the Nunyara Conference Centre in March-April each year.  RYPEN is a fun-packed learning experience for 14-17 year olds at a dynamic weekend residential camp. It provides the opportunity to interact with like-minded individuals and experience a weekend of learning activities and new friendships. For many awardees the camp is not just training, it is their first experience in communal living with people from other who may have different ideas and beliefs.

Rotaract
The Rotaract Club of Adelaide City was started as a "daughter" club of our Rotary club.  many of the original members were young people who had been through the RYLA experience, both as participants and leaders, and who were keen to continue their Rotary journey.  Membership has grown to 31 members and the Club has regular monthly meetings in  Hutt Street in the city.  Meetings start at 6.00pm and everyone is encouraged to drop in to their meetings. John Karran has been especially supportive of the Rotaract Club in its formative stage and attends many of their meetings.

The Rotaractors have been very supportive and hands-on at our Club's various fundraising events.

National Youth Science Forum (NYSF)

Our Club has for many years sponsored Year 11 students to the National Youth Science Forum, a 12-day residential program designed to give students a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and to encourage continued studies in those fields.  Currently, sessions are held in Canberra, Brisbane and Perth.  As part of the program, participants:

  • visit science and technology related laboratories and facilities,
  • go on site tours,
  • participate in workshops
  • attend social events,
  • participate in group activities to improve communication and presentation skills.
Each year, some of the attendees are selected to come back and participate in the Student Staff Leadership Program (SSLP) in preparation to help run the next year's program.  Each year, the Club provides 50% sponsorship to one or two students to take part.  Subsequently, they attend a club meeting to report on the event and thank members for their support.

Vocational Visits

Each year, we aim to have a number of vocational visits.  These have been curtailed somewhat in recent times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
