Members Kirsti, Liz, Paige and Erfan (and family members) attended the inaugural Afghanistan Culture Day Celebration on Sunday 1 Feb. It was a wonderful celebration of the rich cultural heritage of Afghanistan through music, poetry, stories, art and traditional cuisine – and brought Afghan and Aussies together. Erfan spoke about his Afghan Girls Underground School at the event.
We are just a week away from our Cuppa Conversation bus trip to the Barossa to explore the delights of the wineries, lavender farm, Whispering Wall and other highlights for our Cuppa migrants (and accompanying Rotarians) to enjoy. Cost is $15 for wine tasting or $5 to attend; bring your own picnic or buy something along the way. The two buses are limited to 35 people only, and will be driven by Adelaide Parks Rotarian Duncan Irvine and Yvette.

We had an update from Jose (RC Dili LaFaek) on our Club's management of the Timor water projects at Lo’oqueu and Sulamali: They finished laying the pipework at Lo’oqueu last week. So far they've installed 13 taps and set up the power supply, which allows them to install the pump. They're now working on cleaning the tank and will soon install the pump at the bore. They’ve also installed a water filter at the school.
Regarding Haemanu, they've been negotiating with the electrician to ensure power can be installed close to the water resource area. The local authorities are providing and funding the power supply. Next week, they plan to install pipelines to the two reserve tanks and to the community taps. They have changed the water source for Haemanu again after finding some issues when they rechecked the water quality. In discussion, the local authorities pointed out an alternative water source that has a power supply nearby. So they’ll now use this new water source, as it is close to the tank providing gravity supply to the villages - the distance about 800metres compared to the one they'd identified before when International Director John Wotherspoon and Paul Jupp visited.
On Wednesday 4 March, the Women in Rotary SA Chapter will be holding its annual International Women’s Day breakfast; all are invited to attend. This year it will be held at the Arkaba Hotel’s Top Room from 7am-9am and the guest speaker will be Kate Croser, CEO SA Film Corporation.
