Last Friday night, around 80 people attended the Rumi Palace Afghan restaurant to hear our member Erfan Abidi talk about girl’s education in Taliban-occupied Afghanistan. Erfan structured his talk around belief structures and the Quoran which doesn’t forbid girls and women from education, careers and freedom from tyranny. Under Taliban rule, girl students after Year 6 are forbidden formal education, so “Circle of Friends 132” (through Erfan’s prodigious effort) collects funds from generous donors to pay for teachers in hidden schools throughout Afghanistan. Erfan’s talk was inspiring and with the help of Community Service members Paige (and Peter), Katey, Kirsti, Lili, John, Rob, Yvette and Erfan it was also a wonderful fundraiser through a painting auction, Grange wine auction and a copy of Erfan’s book - thanks Rob for being auctioneer. Raffle prizes, a wine wall and donations also made the evening very successful with around $5000 being raised. Well done everyone for your efforts and a delightful evening full of great food (thanks to Rumi Palace) and enjoyable company.
Today (Wednesday 13 Nov), Elaine had her left knee replacement at Calvary Adelaide. The operation went well. She’ll be there for around nine days in recovery and rehabilitation. Pop in to see her if you have a spare minute or two. We all wish Elaine a speedy recovery.
Keep this date free – Saturday 30 November 2024 is our Christmas Croquet Challenge event where we play some matches to try to win back our Silver Teapot Trophy from the Rotaract Club of Adelaide City – and then enjoy a wonderfully casual meal and conversation to celebrate the festive season. The Christmas event will be held at the South Terrace Croquet Club from 5.30pm to around 8.30pm.
This coming Thursday is breakfast at the South Terrace Croquet Club with a Board meeting afterwards. See you there.
