Last Thursday morning, our member Pat spoke about one of her art works. Previously we had heard that she produced a “pulsing” heart installation in the Rundle Mall about three years ago; and for her talk she brought in a Marquette of a “Place of Courage” installation that she designed for consideration for the non-profit organisation Spirit of Women (a foundation founded by Helen Oxenham). Pat’s tendered design was to erect a tall lamp-like structure (see photo) and a seated area in the parklands that would give victims the courage to speak and to confront the impact of domestic abuse. The Marquette features three tall teardrop-shaped appendages that would drip water into “ponds” below. This installation has yet to be chosen by an organisation for manufacture, but it highlights the thought and passion that Pat puts into all her artistic endeavours. Pat’s talk was very moving and we will hear a longer talk about her life and times when more of our members are back from their overseas travels.
Last Saturday our Club participated in the Walk Against Domestic Violence. Stuart Marshall was our Victoria Square contact person and was joined by his daughter Carey, Erfan, Lili, Ian and Max, Pat, Paul E, and several Cuppa Conversation attendees. Our own Rob McLennan was again the MC at the Rotunda speak-fest. Due to this year’s walk being in September instead of November (due to Adelaide City Council dates being available, this year’s walk was a few less than last year as other events such as footy, City-Bay Fun Run organisation by other Rotary Clubs, plus other events impacted numbers a little.
At the same time as the Walk, I volunteered to attend “Sign Up Saturday” – an event at Bunnings Mile End to give Rotary and other service clubs a venue to highlight their various clubs or organisations to Bunning’s customers. Our Rotary stand included volunteers from AdLight, Adelaide Parks, Burnside, Hyde Park, Norwood and Unley. We gave out literature on our programs and projects, which included information on a point of contact to seek out a club near their home or work. I and Des Munroe from Burnside club were invited to be interviewed on CoastFM at 11.30am for 10 minutes. Des mentioned his Club’s bird box project and I spoke on Rotary generally (including EndPolio and youth programs such as RYLA, RYPEN and NYSF) as well as our Club’s Cuppa Conversation and Timor Leste projects.
Richard and I were happy to interview Ian and Sheryl Delaere’s daughter Charlotte as our National Youth Science Forum attendee who will be financially supported by our Club and her parents. Charlotte has already been approved as an NYSF attendee and will be in attendance at Government House on 14 October with the other NYSF participants. The NYSF week interstate will be held in January 2025 during Uni break; on Charlotte’s return, we will invite her to speak to our Club on her experiences.
This week we said farewell to Alison and Paul who are off on their European holidays. Safe travels.

Mitchell - Alcatraz Riesling 2022
Mitchell’s three key Clare Valley vineyards range in altitude from 300 to 450 metres; the Sevenhill Vineyard, Alcatraz Vineyard and Growers Vineyard.
Their Alcatraz Vineyard in the heart of Clare Valley was planted in 1962 on an exposed easterly facing slope and nicknamed "Alcatraz" as there was no escaping the cold, wet winter days spent working the vines.
Its old vines are grown on red loam over limestone soils with an east-facing slope that receives the gentle morning sun, but is sheltered from the direct sun in the heat of the afternoon.
The dry grown vines are hand pruned and handpicked with no artificial fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides used in growing these grapes. This largely explains why the vineyard produces award-winning quality wines year-on-year.
This medium bodied, dry white wine is a delicious Riesling with generous flavour and refreshing acidity. It’s a crisp, mouth-watering wine that’s ready to drink now, comparing well to much more expensive wines.

A furniture and interior decoration D.I.Y. store recently set up a customer assistance department. The first call they got was from a lady who had purchased a wardrobe early in the morning. She explained that after assembly the wardrobe had crumbled three times when the public transport bus passed in front of her house.
The store sent a technician over to her place. He reassembled the wardrobe - which was on the second floor - and then went into it to observe what would happen when the bus, which was due a few minutes later, went by.
The phone rang just then and the lady went downstairs to take the call.
Just then her husband came home from work with a terrible flu. Hearing his wife on the phone he trudged upstairs where he found the wardrobe. On opening one of the doors and seeing the man inside he exclaimed "What are you doing in there!?!"
To which the guy replied "I know you'll never believe this, but I'm waiting for the bus!!"
