This coming Saturday is our Club’s participation in the Walk Against Domestic Violence. If you haven’t already registered, please do so or just come along on the day to support this important social consciousness event. Stuart Marshall is our contact point at Victoria Square - please meet at 9am and he will have our RC of Adelaide Light banner and a couple of signs. The walk begins at 10am from Victoria Square to the Rotunda – a 10 minute (or so) walk with a range of guest speakers to listen to while grabbing a coffee (available at the start and end of the walk). Our own Rob McLennan will again be the MC at the Rotunda speak-fest.
At the same time, I will be volunteering at a “Sign Up Saturday” event at Bunnings Mile End all morning as this is the timeline chosen by Bunnings to give Rotary and other service clubs who sell sausages each month a venue to highlight their various clubs or organisations to Bunning’s customers. These stands will feature volunteers from the Rotary Clubs of AdLight, Adelaide Parks, Burnside, Hyde Park, Norwood and Unley. I produced a one-pager for all the Rotary clubs to print out for hand-outs to people interested to learn more about Rotary and have information on a point of contact to seek out a club near their home or work. Other organisations such as CoastFM (which will also be broadcasting the event) will also be in attendance. The event is from 9.30am to 3.00pm.
Last Thursday was a great morning at Coffee Catch-up at the White Picket and very enjoyable. We were joined by a friend of Yvette’s (Kate) and had a full table of animated conversations on our Rotary projects, rehabilitation updates and other interesting topics.
This week we said our farewells to Fred and Barb who are off on holidays. Safe travels.
Last Monday’s BBQ at Bunnings Mile End was a extremely busy, with us selling out of snags half an hour before the third shift took over. Luckily Angus was able to pick up extra packets of sausages to see us through the rest of the day. Thanks to members Paul E, Dean, Pat, Rob, Yvette, Di, Angus, Lili, Paul J plus our Cuppa Conversation attendees Laura, Layne and Vanessa.
This coming Thursday is another Coffee Catch-up at the White Picket Café.

Mitchell - Alcatraz Riesling 2022
Mitchell’s three key Clare Valley vineyards range in altitude from 300 to 450 metres; the Sevenhill Vineyard, Alcatraz Vineyard and Growers Vineyard.
Their Alcatraz Vineyard in the heart of Clare Valley was planted in 1962 on an exposed easterly facing slope and nicknamed "Alcatraz" as there was no escaping the cold, wet winter days spent working the vines.
Its old vines are grown on red loam over limestone soils with an east-facing slope that receives the gentle morning sun, but is sheltered from the direct sun in the heat of the afternoon.
The dry grown vines are hand pruned and handpicked with no artificial fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides used in growing these grapes. This largely explains why the vineyard produces award-winning quality wines year-on-year.
This medium bodied, dry white wine is a delicious Riesling with generous flavour and refreshing acidity. It’s a crisp, mouth-watering wine that’s ready to drink now, comparing well to much more expensive wines.
Inviting Your Organisation to Say NO with Rotary 2024 Walk for Respect Saturday 14 September 2024
Rotary in South Australia is seeking you and your organisation’s support, by joining with us on Saturday 14 Sept 2024 In the “Walk for Respect”. This walk follows up on our inaugural walk in November 2023 which attracted more than 1,000 people and received considerable media coverage.
A lot has happened over the past 12 months culminating in the State Government decision, soon after our inaugural walk, to hold a Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence in South Australia.
To maintain the momentum in the fight against domestic violence, we are planning a second peaceful walk from Victoria Square to the Elder Park Rotunda. The walk will start at 10am, taking about 30 minutes to stroll 1.2 km down King William Street where some key partners will address attendees to share their views. At the end of the walk and after hearing from these speakers, there will be opportunities for walkers to stay a while to mix with fellow walkers, share stories and interact with some displays from local DV support organisations. Coffee and food options will be available.
To ensure success for this walk, we need the support of the general community, as much as organisations involved in the area of domestic violence. We would encourage and invite your organisation to register to be a Group walking in the Parade. Following that, it would be fantastic if you could encourage your staff; customers and supporters, to walk behind your lead banner to promote your organisation and its support.

A man was taking his wife, who was pregnant with twins, to the hospital when his car went out of control and crashed.
Regaining consciousness, he saw his brother, a relentless practical joker, sitting at his bed side.
He asked his brother how his wife was doing and his brother said, "Don't worry, everybody is fine and you have a son and a daughter, but the hospital was in a real hurry to get the birth certificates filed and since both you and your wife were unconscious, I named them for you."
The husband was thinking to himself, "Oh no, what has he done now?" and asked with some trepidation, "Well, bro, what did you name them?"
Whereupon, his brother replied, "I named the little girl Denise."
The husband, relieved, said, "That's a lovely name! And what did you come up with for my son?"
The brother winked at the nurse and replied, "Denephew."
