President's Pen
Thank you to Past President John Wotherspoon for filling in for me so willingly last Thursday.

Our Club is pleased to announce we have just forwarded our September contribution of $2,000 for the Colombian Scholarship Program to the Rotary Club of Bogota Suba . We know it will be gratefully received and will be immediately put to good use and we are thrilled our collaboration continues to benefit more students in Colombia.

For those of you who attended the Tour of the Adelaide Town Hall organised by Adelaide City Rotaract Club last Monday and led by The Lady Mayoress, we certainly enjoyed a wonderful evening.  It proved to be a  building full of  rich history, secrets, scandals and we were privileged to hear from three experts on specific topics pertaining to Adelaide and it’s establishment as a city.  We toured through the rooms, culminating with a supper in the parlour of The Lady Mayoress, Genevieve Haese, who outlined her interest in discovering the history behind the ladies who had held the position before her. We thank the Rotaractors for the evening and trust it was a fundraising success.

Remember to register to attend Rotary Club of Eastwood’s End Polio Fundraiser at Pagoda Restaurant, 189 Glen Osmond Road, Frewville on Wednesday 11th October, 6.30 for a 7pm start. We have quite a group interested in going so Adelaide Light will certainly fill a table with our presence. It will be great to have another occasion to enjoy the company of Eastwood Rotarians and their partners.

Last week's meeting
Last week's speaker was Lisa Burman, originally a primary teacher, but now an educational consultant specialising in Early Learning.  Lisa spoke about her 120 years in New York, which started just a month after the World Trade Centre disaster in 2001.  Her role there was as a consultant in a company called "Aussie" (Australian-US services in education).  During her time with the company it grew from 60 to 350 consultants, 80% of whom were Australian.  She moved into a borwnstone in Brooklyn and consulted with 3-4 schools, the most challenging of which was a "bilungual" school, wgere each class had two teachers, one using American sign language and the other speaking in English.  She found some of the most effective changes were to change the environment from "cluttered" to "beautiful", and to introduce books into the classroom.

A lot of the ideas for all this come from Carla Rinaldi, one of the Thinkers in Residence in Adelaide, who comes from Reggio Emilia in Italy - one of the leaders in innovative educational practices.  One of the fascinating aspects in what Lisa presented was the idea of young children producing their own books.  We saw a video of a 4-year old "reading" his own book, which consisted of a series of pictures he had drawn, and then another video of two 7-year olds who read and talked about quite complex stories they had written.  So, the program is about encouraging the children's imagination, and giving them a sense of "I can do this" - rather than criticising their shortcomings and failures.

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it Fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build Goodwill and better Friendships?
  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?
