Last Thursday was a Coffee Catch-up at the White Picket and very enjoyable. At week three, Elaine took her first foray into the wide world following her right knee replacement and is doing very well indeed.
I spoke today with former Club member (and recent guest speaker) Kym Pedler who suffered a heart attack in late July and had a stent inserted, but then needed several more long stays in hospital in quick succession for major heart surgery and a bad reaction to certain medications he was prescribed. The good news is that Kym is now on the road to recovery after losing 16kilos (he laughingly said that turned out to be a good thing!). Kym’s wife Sandy is providing excellent care of the patient, and the Club members wish Kym a full and speedy recovery.
This week we said our farewells to Bruce and John who departed for various countries overseas and wish them a safe and enjoyable holiday.
This week was also one of great sadness as we heard of the untimely death of the President of the Rotary Club of Dili Lafaek, Imercio (Mersu) Noronha. Mersu was instrumental in completing on time and on budget our previous two Timor Leste projects (clean water and multi-function court) and was to be the lead on our forthcoming project in Suai, Cova Lima to provide clean potable water for two remote villages. Mersu took on the Presidency of the Dili Lafaek Club just last month but was the "heart of his Club" and had spent his life volunteering to serve his community.
With Timor Leste being part of Rotary District 9560, their Board unanimously agreed to support Mersu's club members to attend his funeral and paid for the 8-hour drive from Dili to his home town of Suai. The District will also probably make longer term arrangements for the support of Mersu's wife and three year old daughter. Mersu drove John Wotherspoon, Kirsti Kankkunen and Rob McLennan on their tour of Timor Leste as part of the D9560 visit in May this year; they got to know his love of life and vivacity very well.
Our thoughts are with Mersu's family, friends and Rotary members at this time. It was a tragic loss of life inflicted upon him. Our Timor Leste water project will go ahead in honour of him and his dedication to helping others in his community.
Last Sunday’s Father’s Day BBQ at Bunnings Mile End was a huge success with snags being bought in batches of four and six – as well as singles – throughout the day. Thanks to members Rob, Paul E, Pat, Liz, Yvette, Paige, Kirsti, Alison, Di, Lili, plus Ian and son Max (recent guests at our Kent Town Hotel meeting), as well as our Cuppa Conversation attendees Irma, Karina and Joanna. Mitchell - Alcatraz Riesling 2022
Mitchell’s three key Clare Valley vineyards range in altitude from 300 to 450 metres; the Sevenhill Vineyard, Alcatraz Vineyard and Growers Vineyard.
Their Alcatraz Vineyard in the heart of Clare Valley was planted in 1962 on an exposed easterly facing slope and nicknamed "Alcatraz" as there was no escaping the cold, wet winter days spent working the vines.
Its old vines are grown on red loam over limestone soils with an east-facing slope that receives the gentle morning sun, but is sheltered from the direct sun in the heat of the afternoon.
The dry grown vines are hand pruned and handpicked with no artificial fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides used in growing these grapes. This largely explains why the vineyard produces award-winning quality wines year-on-year.
This medium bodied, dry white wine is a delicious Riesling with generous flavour and refreshing acidity. It’s a crisp, mouth-watering wine that’s ready to drink now, comparing well to much more expensive wines.
Inviting Your Organisation to Say NO with Rotary 2024 Walk for Respect Saturday 14 September 2024
Rotary in South Australia is seeking you and your organisation’s support, by joining with us on Saturday 14 Sept 2024 In the “Walk for Respect”. This walk follows up on our inaugural walk in November 2023 which attracted more than 1,000 people and received considerable media coverage.
A lot has happened over the past 12 months culminating in the State Government decision, soon after our inaugural walk, to hold a Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence in South Australia.
To maintain the momentum in the fight against domestic violence, we are planning a second peaceful walk from Victoria Square to the Elder Park Rotunda. The walk will start at 10am, taking about 30 minutes to stroll 1.2 km down King William Street where some key partners will address attendees to share their views. At the end of the walk and after hearing from these speakers, there will be opportunities for walkers to stay a while to mix with fellow walkers, share stories and interact with some displays from local DV support organisations. Coffee and food options will be available.
To ensure success for this walk, we need the support of the general community, as much as organisations involved in the area of domestic violence. We would encourage and invite your organisation to register to be a Group walking in the Parade. Following that, it would be fantastic if you could encourage your staff; customers and supporters, to walk behind your lead banner to promote your organisation and its support.
