Last weekend, the District held a very successful Multi-District Impact Summit at the Morphettville Racecourse. For the Showcase of Rotary projects, Erfan was generously provided with a stand donated by Rotarian Angela Ellis, and Adelaide Light provided the pull-up banner, flyers and business cards for Erfan. Our Club project was of course the “Afghan Girls’ Underground Empowerment Network” providing secret schooling for Afghan girls banned from school beyond Year 6. The stand offered Erfan and his helpers the opportunity to promote the project and seek funds to be sent to Afghanistan via “Circle of Friends – 132” to pay women teachers and provide educational material.
On Thursday 19 June, our Club will hold its Changeover – or Rollover of Presidency – at The Caledonian Hotel, 219 O’Connell Street, North Adelaide in the Barton Room, 6.30pm for 6.45pm start. This special occasion celebrates the great projects we’ve undertaken, gives us the opportunity to thank those who have contributed to our Club’s successes, and see the photos of our year’s events. The 2-course meal provides the same entrée of pumpkin arancini and vegetable spring rolls (special plates for Gluten-free); with the $36 main meals including panko crumbed prawns, Thai beef or tofu salads, crispy fish and chips, chicken or cauliflower schnitzels with coleslaw or beef ragu with pappardelle (to name just a few); the $50 option includes seafood linguine, Atlantic salmon, slow cooked lamb, beef duo of eye fillet and pie, or a mushroom risotto (plus other choices). Vegetarian and gluten-free options are provided – just let the staff know when you order. Please book your seats for yourself and partner/friend at president@rotaryadelaidelight.org - it will be a great evening. RSVP prior to 12 June so that we can make arrangements with the Hotel.

2018 was a fine vintage and it sells on Wine Direct for $45/bottle but China’s helped us to offer it for 70% less than that… so, it’s understandably popular.

2018 growing season was warm and dry. Despite this, the vines were in a perfectly balanced and healthy state heading into vintage. All canopies in the vineyard were strong and full, the fruit set and ripening was consistent with fantastic flavours. Clare Valley at its best!
W I N E M A K I N G
The juice for this wine was fermented open slate tanks, including a whole bunch component. Hand plunged and a slow ferment to capture the natural flavours from the vineyard. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for 18 months before being bottled without filtration.
Scotland’s best loved bard... Robert (Rabbie) Burns is celebrated at dinners all over the world on his birthday, 25 January 1759. Yet it’s a decidedly unScottish summer here in January, so we prefer to make merry over this rascally poet during our Antipodean winter instead.
Please join us for another theatrically Scottish dinner at the Edinburgh Hotel’s Victoria Room on Wednesday 11 June for only $65 each. There’ll be toasts, bagpipes, dancing and merriment with a Haggis entrée option or the Ed's entrée if you prefer, then a four-choice main meal. An elderly Canadian gentleman, a some years ago, arrived in Paris by plane. At the French customs desk, the man took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry-on bag.
"You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked, sarcastically.
The elderly gentleman admitted he had been to France previously.
"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready."
The Canadian said, "The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."
"Impossible, Canadians always have to show your passports on arrival in France!"
The Canadian senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look, then he quietly explained, "Well, when I came ashore at Juno Beach on D Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find any Frenchmen to show it to."
