This week it was with deep sadness we advise of the passing of long time Member and Honorary Member David Rowe (25 October 1928-16 October 2024).
For those who didn’t receive my email, David was just nine days short of his 96th birthday and even though we hadn’t seen him in the past few years, he was a valued member of our Adelaide Light since its inception in 1985 as a Provisional Club and was one of a few who nurtured the Club’s Chartering on 12 June 1986. That same year, David was a District Governor’s Special Representative to DG Max Smith.
David gave many years of service to our Club (and his original Rotary Club of Adelaide). David was a gentleman in all ways, had an irrepressible smile, great humour and he endeared himself to everyone.
David leaves behind his much adored wife Betty, son Mike and his partner Leonie, daughter Jill, five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Our condolences to all the family. Vale, David.
We’ve received great emails from Paul and Alison Jupp during their trip to France and Greece. Paul has been busily crafting an acoustic guitar in Southern France (seen above still needing its fretwork and strings), and Alison has been using her French at street markets and other events. On 4 October, Paul and Alison attended the Villefranche Rouergue Rotary Club meeting (Alison understood 75% of the meeting while Paul just nodded, apparently), and then they attended the Rotary Club’s charity concert a few days later in a beautiful medieval church. Paul and Alison will return from Greece in early November.
Better news is that Barry Grear is on the mend after his second stroke and is now driving short distances, and using a cane instead of a walker. With speech therapy and gym work, his recovery is progressing according to his wife Barbara. We’ll be pleased to see him again at Rotary when he’s able to attend.
It was also lovely to see Don Tindale at our last Coffee Catch-up.
Also on the sick list is Pat Welke who managed to fall onto a concrete pathway which resulted in a hairline fracture of the ulna (near the elbow) and a few cracked ribs. Luckily, the hospital could supply a sling instead of putting a cast on the elbow, but that doesn’t diminish the pain Pat is experiencing. Unfortunately, she spent most of Saturday at the RAH instead of the Colombian Cooking Class!
I am sorry to say, Fred Field has decided to resign from Rotary due to health reasons. Fred joined Adelaide Light on 23 February 2006, having transferred from the RC of Port Augusta which he joined on 7 July 2004.
For the past 18 years, Fred has been a stalwart in our Club and his background of Law stood us in good stead when any matters arose needing his expertise. He was Secretary of the Club for many years as well as Rotary Foundation Director and Public Officer/Child Protection Officer. Fred was presented with a Paul Harris Fellow in 2011 and received two extra Sapphires since then due to his commitment and hard work for our Club.
He and Barb will be greatly missed, but he will still be a “Friend” of the Club and knows they are welcome anytime to a meeting or event that we hold in the future.
Last Saturday, our members Lili Osario and Maria Garces enlisted the help of Geraldine (from Cuppa Conversations) to do the preparation work to demonstrate Colombian Cooking to the 16 people who attended – and we got to eat a delicious lunch. With thanks to Rob and Sally McLennan who hosted the event at their home, Lili gave us a detailed talk on Colombia’s varied terrain and culinary diversity. Maria spoke to us on her area’s cuisine and how it differs from area to area depending on the produce that is locally grown.
Then the cooking class began with us first being served with “plaintain chips” (plaintain is similar to a green banana that needs to be cooked) served with hogao (a freshly chopped topping of spring onions, diced tomatoes, salt and oil). Entrée soon followed which was “ripe plaintain with guava paste and mozzarella cheese” baked for 20 minutes for added richness. Our main meal was “Arepas with a shredded beef/spring onion/garlic and spices as well as a similar chicken/vegetable saute” served on different types of dough patties. This was topped off by a lovely “Lemon dessert with Ducales (biscuits)” that were layered between blitzed condensed milk/cream/lemon juice and then chilled in the freezer – absolutely delicious and so easy to make. Our thanks to Maria, Lili and Geraldine for the time and effort of endlessly chopping the tomatoes and spring onions, and teaching us how to cook a wonderful Colombian meal.
So, after some spontaneous Merengue dancing and trying on Colombian attire, we all headed home. Soon to be inducted member Ian Delaere said his son Max was so enamoured of the hogao topping that he requested it to top some fresh crusty bread the next day.
This coming Thursday is dinner at the Kent Town Hotel from 6.00pm – please come and welcome Ian and Sheryl who will be inducted into Adelaide Light during the evening.
