Our Rotary/Rotaract Quiz Night was a great success! Emcee Emmanuel did an outstanding job of revving up the audience and an excellent night resulted from great questions, table competitions, coin slide shows of expertise in getting nearest the bottle of whisky prizes, and a couple of auctions helped raise much needed funds for water and other projects in Timor Leste.
Our thanks to Quiz Night committee members Paige, Lili, Margie, Rob, Stuart, Yvette, Steph, Nic, Will and Emmanuel for all your efforts in bringing together the event logistics, set up, wine wall, special auction and silent auction, coffee station, moving a ton of boxed wine into Lili’s place to catalogue and then moving it again to the venue. Other major helpers on the night were John W for acknowledgement to country, Nic and Yvette for producing the night’s quiz questions and table competitions, and the countless others who assisted on the night.
We would especially like to thank the major sponsors and donors of goods for their generosity in helping us raise just under $4,500 to undertake projects that will better the lives of Timor Leste’s people living in poor rural villages.

Last week our guest speaker was Lina Perez from Carers SA talking about “Carer Awareness, Free Services & Support Available”. Lina’s excellent speech covered facts such as there are almost 2.65 million Australian Carers (equating to 1 in 9 people; 11% of the population); over 235,000 Carers are under the age of 25 nationally; and the interesting fact is that Unpaid Carers provide an estimated 2.2 billion hours of care every year, saving the Australian Government up to $77.9 billion annually.
In SA, the number of Unpaid Carers is 245,000. Carers can be parents to disabled children, siblings helping other siblings, sons and daughter helping a parent, or even a friend who provides emotional support, grocery shopping, paying bills, cleaning, administering medicine, helping with cooking or feeding or showering – or providing a multitude of other tasks to help someone else. Carers SA is an organisation that can provide a wide range of personalised services, assistance packages and information to support Carers from all backgrounds and cultures at no cost. If you are a Carer, you can register with Carers SA on their website.
Guest speaker Lina Perez
Over the past few weeks, Rob has been organising a weeding and mulching working bee at Catherine House. Alison, Lili, Bruce and Rob joined Catherine House’s maintenance volunteer Alan in weeding the back gardens of four of the five properties that provides crisis, longer term accommodation and support services to women experiencing homelessness in South Australia. Rob will let us know when the next working bee is required.

This week, I will be sending out an email for members who would like to order a “Together we say NO to Domestic & Family Violence” purple Polo shirt (with collar) or T-shirt – with the choice of a colour text or white text only. Cost of the Polo shirts are $38 incl GST and the T-shirts are $24 with GST. These tops are also labelled with our Rotary Club name – so can be used for the Walk against Domestic Violence event being held in late November, and can also be used for our BBQs, tree plantings or other events. When we have all the orders in, we will have these mass produced and sent to us. You’ll need to choose the type of top you wish to order (Polo or T-shirt), text colour preference and your size.

Complementing our recent Clare Riesling, we’re pleased to offer an excellent McLaren Vale Grenache that’s also half price at just $150.00 per case ($12.50/bottle).
Grenache is a McLaren Vale specialty, medium bodied and more complex than pinot noir - essentially an easy drinking summer substitute for shiraz, without its earthiness. This one from Hither & Yon is bright, juicy and lively with food - ideal in the warmer months ahead. You may detect wild strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, black cherry, stewed plums, some spicy cinnamon and black pepper. With time to breathe it comes across confidently on the first night and endures for the second.

"From the Leask brothers’ youngest Grenache vines at 13 years old, crafted into a youthful, fragrant, bistro style with 20% whole bunch influence in the winemaking that offers a subtle sappiness in the palate. While you are being seduced by its floral aromas and freshly squeezed plum and apple juiciness, you should pause for a mo, as it has plenty to offer in its textural game, lip-smacking and with an appealing spicy/peppery tannin profile in the palate and finish. Bistro, yes, and very food conscious as well – its own crew suggests pairing it with the vegetable and cheese pasty from the Willunga Bakery."

After the success of last year's Mitchell’s Riesling, we’re pleased to offer another excellent Clare Valley Riesling at a heavy discount… this time from Jim Barry.
This showcase Riesling is what the Clare does best from the Barry Family’s Lodge Hill vineyard. It’s an A-grade wine from a high quality Clare Valley producer - a superbly bracing, concentrated and limey Riesling we're able to sell for just $150.00 per case ($12.50/bottle… i.e. half price).
Lodge Hill was Wolta Wolta pastoral run from 1839. Jim Barry bought it in 1977 for The Lodge Hill Vineyard, convinced it would “produce some of the best Riesling in the Clare Valley.” At 480 metres above sea level in Clare Valley's Eastern Ranges, its grapes receive concentrated bursts of sunlight and cool nights that encourage slower ripening. This helps deliver beautiful natural acidity and citrus characters that ripen early because of the small crop it produces. Gentle pressing and a rapid move into the fermentation preserves the natural fruit flavours.
Essentially, it’s just a deliciously drinkable. So why not buy some and help others by funding our local and overseas Rotary service work, while giving your friends and family a very good deal. This fundraiser will help our Rotary Club build water supplies in Timor Lesté, rescue Afghans stranded in Pakistan as they flee the Taliban and also help recent migrants to Australia quickly feel welcome.
