Last Thursday’s Coffee Catch-up was excellent. We had a visit from two of our long-time members Graham Smith and Don Tindale (who hadn’t been able to attend for months due to health issues) as well as Di, John, Yvette, Rob and Elaine.
After five days on the “One & All” sail training vessel, Sadra Zarei (son of Fatemeh and Reza) returned home and was welcomed back by his parents, Elaine and myself. Sadra said he enjoyed the camaraderie on board and made many new friends. After being debriefed by the Captain and senior crew members, Sadra thanked the Rotary Club of AdLight for opening up a a whole new world of friends (instead of concentrating on electronic gadgetry at home), letting him experience the joys? of sea sickness (one Day 1), climbing the rigging and getting to experience the teamwork required to sail a ship to Kangaroo Island and back. Sadra wrote a lovely letter about his voyage, but as he will be a guest speaker at our Club soon, I won’t spoil his talk with those details.
Our dinner supporting Afghan Girls’ Education which will be held at Rumi Palace on Friday 8 November sold out within two weeks and has a “wait list” of nine people. Well done to Katey, Paige, Kirsti and Erfan for your promotion of the event. Mitchell’s three key Clare Valley vineyards range in altitude from 300 to 450 metres; the Sevenhill Vineyard, Alcatraz Vineyard and Growers Vineyard.
Their Alcatraz Vineyard in the heart of Clare Valley was planted in 1962 on an exposed easterly facing slope and nicknamed "Alcatraz" as there was no escaping the cold, wet winter days spent working the vines.
Its old vines are grown on red loam over limestone soils with an east-facing slope that receives the gentle morning sun, but is sheltered from the direct sun in the heat of the afternoon.
The dry grown vines are hand pruned and handpicked with no artificial fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides used in growing these grapes. This largely explains why the vineyard produces award-winning quality wines year-on-year.
This medium bodied, dry white wine is a delicious Riesling with generous flavour and refreshing acidity. It’s a crisp, mouth-watering wine that’s ready to drink now, comparing well to much more expensive wines.

Jack wakes up at home with a huge hangover after the night of his office Christmas party. He forces himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins next to a glass of water on the side table. And, next to them, a single red rose!
Jack sits on the bed and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. He looks around the room and sees that it is in perfect order, spotlessly clean. So is the rest of the house.
He takes the aspirins, cringes when he sees a huge black eye staring back at him in the bathroom mirror, and notices a note, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to go shopping-- Love you.
He stumbles to the kitchen and sure enough, there is hot breakfast and the morning newspaper. His son is also at the table, eating.
Jack asks, "Son...what happened last night." Son answers "Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and out of your mind. You broke some furniture, was sick in the hallway, and got that black eye when you ran into the door!"
Jack says, "So, why is everything in such perfect order, so clean, I have a red rose, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?"
His son replies, "Mum dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off, you screamed, 'Leave me alone, lady, I'm married!' "
