Newsletter 1909 (Apr. 16, 2024)

Last Saturday was a very successful Cuppa Conversation at Cozhina’s Café in Sturt Street with 34 migrants and Rotarians. We certainly took up a great deal of space in the Café, and the Cozhina hosts and servers were excellent. For two hours, there was great conversation, lots of laughter, and an excellent amount of networking for all. It was lovely to see Erfan bring his newly arrived niece Rasa to our event, and another family bought their young son. Thanks to Lili for organising this monthly event through our WhatsApp page and following up on recording new attendees to add to our ever growing list of attendees - we really appreciate Lili’s input.

Last Thursday’s catch-up at breakfast at the South Terrace Croquet Club was excellent. We were able to catch up on several members’ last few weeks/months of absence. Erfan has changed jobs and not working so many shifts to assist his brother’s family from Afghanistan; Dean is making a good recovery after a fall that needed stitches to his head and hand (he’s looking forward to holding a golf club again!); Richard’s friends from Canada have left after long visit; Paul E’s health is getting better every day; and Di’s aching hand is making a slow recovery too. It was great to just sit around and “chew the fat” with members instead of having a speaker every week.

A reminder to Board members that the next Board meeting will be held at John Wotherspoon’s home (tomorrow) on Wednesday April 17 at 6.00pm. I look forward to seeing our Directors on the night; members are also welcome to attend. If a Director can’t attend on the night, please forward your report to the President and Secretary prior to the meeting. It’s also getting close to the end of our Rotary year, so Director’s reports for the Annual Report are due to me by the end of May. I’ll provide information on our Club Changeover re day and venue soon.

The District Area 12 Dinner (the group of 12 Adelaide-based Rotary Clubs), it will be held on 14 May at the Glenelg Gold Club, James Melrose Road, Novar Gardens from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Cost for a 2-course meal is $60pp and the guest speaker will be Detective Superintendent Des Bray, Head of Major Crime, speaking about “Current techniques used in homicide investigations”. These events are a great way to catch up with Rotarians from our neighbouring Clubs. I will be attending.

Don’t forget - as Anzac Day falls on 25 April, we will be holding our monthly evening meeting this Thursday 18 April at 6.00pm at the Kent Town Hotel.
