On Saturday 4 May, District 9510 is holding the President’s Elect training day. On Sunday 5 May from 9.00am to 3.30pm, is the District Assembly training for people taking on positions within the Club or who are interested in learning more about Rotary. Barry and Barbara Greer produced a one-page report on the recent District Conference held in Loxton and they found it enjoyable, challenging and friendly. Barry has detailed all the guest speakers and précised their talks. If you’d like a copy of his report, please let me or Barry know and we’d be happy to forward it to your email.
Paul Duke from ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children) was our guest speaker last week. Paul gave an excellent presentation on assisting children under the age of 15yo in developing Pacific Region countries with little or no training/expertise or medical facilities to cope with some medical procedures. A wide variety of conditions are treated by the volunteer doctors of ROMAC such as heart problems, untreated fractures, tumours and scoliosis. These children and a parent or carer are brought to Australia, homed in Rotarians houses for the duration of their operation and recovery and then sent home. These children are referred to ROMAC through Interplast, by overseas medical practitioners, specialist’s outreach clinics, through Rotary Clubs or due to RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) trips which come across children in need. As ROMAC doctors and nurses all volunteer their time to help these overseas children in need, every donation goes directly to providing life giving or dignity restoring surgery not accessible to them in their home country. Since 1988, over 500 children have been helped through this program. All donations over $2 are tax deductible; and volunteers can always assist by picking up or taking patients and carers from and to the airport, visiting them in hospital or taking them away before or after surgery on short trips. There are four engineers traveling in a car; a mechanical engineer, a chemical engineer, an electrical engineer and a computer engineer. The car breaks down.
“Sounds to me as if the pistons have seized. We’ll have to strip down the engine before we can get the car working again”, says the mechanical engineer.
“Well”, says the chemical engineer, “it sounded to me as if the fuel might be contaminated. I think we should clear out the fuel system.”
“I thought it might be a grounding problem”, says the electrical engineer, “or maybe a faulty plug lead.”
They all turn to the computer engineer who has said nothing and say: “Well, what do you think?” “Ummm perhaps if we all get out of the car and get back in again?”
