Christmas holidays are coming all too fast!
Saturday 30 November 2024 is our Christmas Croquet Challenge event where we play some matches to try to win back our Silver Teapot Trophy from the Rotaract Club of Adelaide City – and then enjoy a wonderfully casual meal and conversation to celebrate the festive season. The Christmas event will be held at the South Terrace Croquet Club from 5.30pm to around 8.30pm. Cost is $30 per person for pizzas and a selection of salads. Buy your own drinks at the bar. Last Thursday morning, member Paige Honor gave an excellent talk on “Staying safe on social media”. Paige gave us detailed information on hacking and phishing techniques and how to spot them before irrevocably falling into a trap. Key take-outs were to use strong passwords, two factor authentication; limiting personal info on social media sites, reviewing privacy settings, avoiding public Wi-fis at cafes and airports; using a password manager instead of a piece of paper in your wallet; and checking log-ins from unknown devices regularly.
If caught by a particularly sophisticated hacker/phisher, the best advice is to reset your password and remove unwanted and unauthorised log-ins. Paige then showed us photographs generated by AI (artificial intelligence) such as a gorgeous BNB house being offered for visitors to hire that was surrounded mountains, streams and gardens – that on second glance looked strange as the mountain range started morphing with the house colourations; another image of a café’s food selection showed vegetables that didn’t quite look real or were mismatched – so not a good site from which to order your next meal.
Paige then went on a widely used AI program and asked it provide an image of a horse in a pool and drinking a pina colada – needless to say, within seconds, various photographs were morphed together into a pleasing/comical/anatomically strange concoction!

Last Saturday, seven volunteers headed to one of the Catherine House properties to spend a morning weeding and mulching the garden ready for a sweltering summer. Starting early, the work was completed by 11.30am to beat the day’s heat! Our thanks to Rob, Paige, Kirsti, Yulieth, John, Lili P (friend via Cuppa Conversations) and Rotaractor Sean.
