Last Saturday, we had a wonderfully vibrant Cuppa Conversation at Pellegrini’s, North Adelaide with 26 migrants from Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Mexico coming along as well as eight Rotarians. Lili has done an outstanding job in advertising Cuppa Conversation via social media to get so many people along to practice their English, ask pertinent questions like part time work links, what events are on and places to see around Adelaide, and just the joy of connecting with others to feel welcome. The next Cuppa Conversation is Saturday 23 September at 10.00am – we’ll let you know the location closer to the date.
I’ve been meeting with the Principal and Assistant Principal of the Clovelly Park Primary School for the erection of our Club’s Peace Pole on Thursday 21 September 2023 (International Peace Day) at a morning school assembly at around 9am. Keep this date free if you would like to attend, along with community leaders and parents from the school’s 50 nationalities who attend the school. Clovelly Park Primary is where Erfan and Manizha’s children Manuhid and Tawhid go to school. More information will be provided about this event soon.
Rotary/Rotaract’s Quiz Night, Friday 29 September 6-10.30pm. Get your $20pp tickets through Humanitix (click HERE) for the event at Wyatt Hall, Pulteney Grammar School, 190 South Terrace, Adelaide. All proceeds to Timor Leste water projects. Paige, Margie, Lili, Liz, Stuart, Erfan, Katey, Paul Ensor and Kirsti have all been working hard on getting donations for prizes. Members can help by going through their wine stocks and donating a few bottles for the “Wine Wall” which is a lucky dip payment of $20 to choose a bottle in a bag (surprise!). Nic Egan and Yvette are gathering together the questions, doing a Run Sheet for the night and producing a couple of power-points for the question/answers and logos of donors. If you feel like it, dress up in a sport’s team theme and win a special prize for the best-dressed group.
Don’t forget, this Thursday morning is Coffee Conversation at the White Picket Café due to the conflict of the Rotary Club of Adelaide’s Founder’s Day lunch at the Adeliade Oval that three Rotarians – John W, Rob and Yvette – are attending.
This coming Friday (25 Aug) is the Adelaide Plunge, where three membersof the Adelaide City Rotaract Club will be abseiling down the Intercontinental Hotel (oval side) to raise at least $850 each ($2,550) for a mental health charity called “Talk Out Loud”. Our Club donated $300 towards the event. President Steph, Zviko and Lucy will abseil 25 storeys (70 metres) down the face of the Hotel. The 70 or so abseilers will start from 2.30pm and the girls are due to abseil at 3.20pm. Go along if you can to view this spectacle.
The Thursday night dinner at the Kent Town been postponed until next week (31 August) at 6.00pm when our guest speaker will be Jeff Cluse on “Rotary says No to Domestic Violence”.
Safe travels to Kirsti and her family who are traveling for a few weeks to Northern Europe and Hungary.

Tell me more: The quiz night will feature the usual favourites; a wine wall, games, Emmanuel as MC, and a raffle. There will be a special prize for the best-dressed table/group. Considering it is the grand final weekend the theme is 'a sport or sports team'. There is something for everyone, you don't have to answer questions to win a prize!
BYO food and drink/alcohol (we will have a tea and coffee station for gold coin donation). We will have card facilities on the night, however, please bring along some gold coins if possible to make the games run more smoothly.
How can you help: Apart from buying tickets, we would be very grateful for donations of wine to add to our wine wall. These will be wrapped up to keep the label a surprise and people will pay for a lucky dip-style chance at a bottle. In the past, this has been a very lucrative sideshow, so rest assured your donation will be impactful. We would also be grateful for donations suitable for a raffle. Another successful Cuppa Conversation took place last Saturday at Pellegrini Café. We had 26 visitors, most of whom were from Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Mexico, and they were all chatty and enthusiastic. At 12 p.m., everyone was still going and engaged... I couldn't be happier... A lot of plans, and a lot of interest in our projects. Even the most shy people said they had a good time. I am extremely grateful to the Rotarians who participated, and I would like to extend an invitation to anyone else who is interested in meeting people from other cultures. The next one will be on September 23rd, at 10 am.
