First Rotary Leadership Summit Held

At Camp Tecumseh, 6:00 pm, Friday, September 24, 2010, the first Rotary Leadership Summit began with (what else?) a meal!  That evening the District Governor welcomed the Rotarians to the event and challenged them to invest themselves in learning how to better serve through Rotary.

The camp staff involved them in some fun, unusual, and effective group exercises.

Mime, Reed Steele provided the entertainment.

On Saturday morning, five Rotarian speakers and one Interact speaker joined the group, each with interesting and inspiring stories.  Among the topics were:

  • Finding and meeting needs in your community—Nancy Riley
  • When a passion finds you, a Honduras water project experience—Ken Lavy
  • Stories from The Rotary Foundation—What it is, how to use it, why to use it—Dan Ryan
  • How a high school student can affect a community and world—Max Alexander
  • Youth Exchange and its affects on people and clubs—Mike Richardson
  • What Interact can do for young people and your community—Martha Sandoval

Participants also discussed opportunities through other activities, events, and projects of their clubs and the district.

On Saturday afternoon, camp staff worked with the group in outdoor group initiatives underscoring ways to improve communications, teamwork and successful results in Rotary, as well as in their businesses.

After the initiatives, the campers concentrated on their passions as well as the passions of other participants.

Before the event ended, Rotarians committed themselves to take positive action in their clubs.

Clubs who sent participants were:  Boswell, Delphi, DeMotte/Kankakee Valley, Elkhart Morning, Monticello, Nappanee, Schererville, South Bend, and Valparaiso.

We would like to thank the Camp Tecumseh staff for this wonderful program

The goal of this event was “to inspire, inform, and ignite” these Rotarians.  The following comments suggest that they exceeded their goal.

“This weekend has opened my eyes to making my club more effective through group dynamics, teamwork, and understanding how to best use my passions to help others through Rotary.”--Kyle
